Spread Zika Virus

Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal to address the pressing issue of the ever spreading Zika Virus. The recent American outbreak of the widespread Zika epidemic has called for cautious measures to be taken in areas of high mosquito population. There have been several moments in the past few months where I would find myself swatting mosquitos, only to have those around me continuously warn me about Zika. The impact the virus has had on the general public has caused mild levels of hysteria across populations in the tri-state area.

It is my understanding that UNICEF’s primary goals are to improve conditions until they are made suitable for children. For this reason, I thought it would be fantastic to have such an incredible organization aid in combating this virus, which most often affects pregnant women. Specifically, I would hope that any financial aid could be directed to supporting the Philadelphia community, as that region is at high risk for Zika virus outbreak. With such help, we can help to fund the expenses of laboratory testing and developments to decrease mosquito populations, and effectively neutralize the spread of the virus.

The New York area will be covered, as it has just invested in 2 additional machines and have 3 more currently in production. Due to the size of the Philadelphia area, I propose that 3 of these machines be ordered for that area to combat the virus. Though $225,000 may seem like a very large amount of money, it is much less costly in comparison to the medical bills and fees associated with treating each and every patient admitted due to infection of the disease, let alone any abnormality correction post-birth from an infected

Since no available vaccines exists and effective preventative measures cannot be applied, what can be done in the meantime? Well, scientists are urging women who live in Latin American countries to avoid pregnancy for the next 2 years. Also, they continually urge pregnant women, and other women of the reproductive age to not visit hard hit areas. They believe this will hopefully help to decrease the number of cases of Zika and in turn Microcephaly. Although these methods won’t be as effective as a vaccine, they will aid in some degree.…

One of these birth defects is microcephaly, which causes a baby to be born with a much smaller skull than expected. People became more concerned and aware after the disease was found out to be sexually transmitted (Press Associated). This caused more concern to the Brazilian people and the world.…

Named for the West Nile district of Uganda, West Nile Virus was first isolated in a woman in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937 (World Health Organization, 2011). Although well known today, prior to 1999 the West Nile Virus was virtually unheard of in the United States. However, in New York City 1999 that changed when we had our first recognized case. Each summer since then it has progressively spread across the continental US infecting 1000s along the way.…

When dangerous diseases like Ebola and the Zika virus infect large populations of people and become a threat to public health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) takes the lead on responding to them. Of most concern are pathogens that fall into the highest levels of containment – biosafety levels three and four – that are easily transimissable in the air with little to no treatment available (“Recognizing Biosafety Levels”). To fight against such threats, the CDC conducts critical research to “tracking disease and finding out what is making people sick and the most effective ways to prevent it” (“Mission, Role, and Pledge”). In recent news, however, federal agencies like the CDC are under scrutiny for not following standard…
