Culture: Its Birth, Transformation, & Spread American actor Wendell Pierce said, “Culture is the intersection of people and life itself. It’s how we deal with life, love, death, birth, disappointment…all of that is expressed in culture.” That is quite true because culture is defined as the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors shared and passed on by the members of a distinct group. It also embodies the products of human work and thought. Today, cultures are constantly changing due to technology and the instant communication it brings. Most just go along with what they are taught, but do they think where their culture began? Cultures can develop in cultural hearths, a place of origin that inspires other major cultures. From these hearths come new ideas and inventions. An example can be the ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian civilizations. In Greece came the idea of democracy and the Olympic Games. The Romans spoke Latin, which then inspired the Romantic languages of Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. From Egypt came papyrus and …show more content…
Ideas and inventions are introduced and sometimes even forced upon other cultures. An example of cultural spread through migration is when masses of people from Ireland moved to America and brought along certain aspects such as St. Patrick’s Day, Irish river dancing and the descendants of the Kennedy family. Dispersion of culture can also occur through trade, such as when the Europeans traded with the Americas. Europe provided domesticated animals, grains, citrus fruits, and of course, numerous diseases. The Americas provided pineapples, tobacco, corn and turkeys. Warfare spreads culture also, such as when Britain occupied India and the sport cricket was introduced. The last way culture can spread is through technology. An example is the phenomenon known as K-Pop, which spreads through YouTube, social media and online
