The fate of a person dictates what will happen in the rest of their life. Fate plays a very important role in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry. In this film, Lacuna Inc., various film techniques, and the relationship between Joel and Clementine all represent the theme of fate. A person’s fate cannot be controlled or altered by what is done to them. The relationships that a person is destined to be in is no exception. Lacuna Inc. has a large impact on many of the characters in the movie. Lacuna Inc. attempted to “play God” for anyone who used their services. After both Joel and Clementine had their memory erased, they still end up together. They both had their memories erased in order to forget the relationship that they were in. Even though they tried forgetting the relationship, they still end up getting back together. Clementine and Joel are destined to be together which is the reason why they got back together, even after the memory erasing process. The memory erasing had no effect on the final outcome of their relationship. Nobody has the ability to pull you away from your fate. An example of this in the film would be Patrick. After Clementine and Joel have their memories erased, Patrick uses Joel's memories in order to win Clementine over. Patrick does everything in his power to pull Clementine away from Joel. Patrick tries everything he can in order to control the fate of Clementine, but fails in doing so. Even though Patrick has all of Joel’s memories at his disposal to win Clementine over, he still is not able to change their fate. Joel tries playing God for Clementine by attempting to change her fate. Joel fails at controlling her fate, creating another example showing that a person’s fate cannot be controlled by what is done to others.
