The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an exquisite and inspiring film directed by Michel Gondry. Regardless of the pain that they feel that comes with their broken and strained relationships, each character realizes that their memories are a significant part of who they are, and how they are shaped today, as without these reminiscent reminders of their past, they wouldn’t have learnt anything from the mistakes they made. This essay will be exploring the tug of war between Joel’s unconscious mind and his redolent memories of Clementine, during the memory erasing process through a surreal vision, how Patrick manipulates Clementine to fall in love with him, by feeding off of Joel’s memories and lastly, how this memory erasing has an effect on either strengthening or diminishing a relationship, leading to how the characters resolve their problems in the film.

You would think that after this memory erasing process, all those painful, unwanted memories and feelings of love and heartbreak would be gone, so that you could live your life to a greater potential. Howard tells Joel “you want to empty your home, you want to empty your life, of Clementine.” With the kind of character Joel reveals himself to be, you can see why he struggled to do so. What’s so captivating about this film is that Joel and Clementine were different. Joel proved his love for Clementine was strong, and that his memories of Clementine were essential, whereas with Howard and Mary, they were stuck in a love triangle, and since Howard and Mary weren’t deep in love like Clementine and Joel, you could say that maybe love influences the memories we hold onto. When Joel says to Clementine in his surreal mind, “I can’t remember anything without you.” , this is showing how his love for Clementine is essentially, apart of who he is, his memories with Clementine are as important as for example, his childhood memories.
