As far as science fiction goes, the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michael Gondry is a model movie for the genre. Having just watched it for the first time, the concept itself is innovative, refreshing, and interesting. The main protagonist is Joel Barish who is played by Jim Carrey and is our narrative point of view. He says his thoughts out loud, and in doing so tells the viewer key points in the story. Joel is a quiet and mildly reserved man who meets another major character, Clementine played by Kate Winslet, and falls deeply in love with her. She is impulsive and erratic, serving as his opposite. The two date for two years, and after a bitter break up, Clementine goes through a procedure to have all memories erased of Joel. After finding out what she did, Joel goes through the procedure as well, but as it is in process, he starts to regret it, and tries to fight against it. The movie masters the idea of of coherent, non-linear chronology. The story jumps back and forth between the order of the events, and tells Joel and Clems relationship in reverse. For the first half an hour, the audience is confused as to what is going on. Not being aware that …show more content…
Even the fact that its setting Valentines Day, which is a nondiegetic element, is major symbolism that continues to contributes to the theme that Clem and Joel’s love is unconventional. It complements their relationship because on the holiday they meet in Montauk on a beach, which is freezing and covered in snow. This is unconventional because usually in any other Hollywood romance movie they would be on a warm beach where it’s sunny and relaxing out. This adds to the fact that this is not your typical love

Regarding the methodology, I chose this film to analyze because there is something deeper than just the surface problems of the characters. I first watched the movie when I was about 10-11 years old with my older brother, but I never really understood the significance behind it, until I was about 17. After that, I watched the film and listened to the soundtrack so many times that I did not need to take any notes on it, when it came to watching the film for the purpose of this essay. The 2005 film Rent, directed by Chris Columbus, is based on Jonathan Larson’s Broadway musical of the same name.…

Mid Term The film No Country for Old Men directed by Joel and Ethan Coen has a very specific meaning ,that would have not been played out well without the ways narration and editing were used throughout the film. The aesthetics of the film played well together to make such an interesting plot. Many tools of cinema were used throughout the movie but these two specifically stood out to me to give the movie the meaning that it did. This films ending was surprising, and worked the way it did with the extraordinary ways narration and editing were used to come to that particular ending. No Country for Old Men has a theme and ending that could be interrupted in many different ways.…

The film I chose to do for this film review assignment was Longtime Companion. The movie premiered in 1989 and during that time our society was just beginning to understand that AIDS was a disease and research was being done on how to treat this disease. In the early 1980’s and up until the release of the film, those that had been diagnosed with AIDS had a very poor prognosis for survival. Also when the movie was released, society was beginning to realize that AIDS not only affected the gay community, but every member of our society.
