Sports photography is one of the many sub-genres of photography. Like the name suggests, any sport can be included into sports photographs. There are 2 major uses for sports photography: journalism (anything from newspapers and magazines to digital news websites) and advertising (promoting brands, events, and other similar things).

Before you pick a spot, make sure that there’s enough visibility and that you can capture at least a part of the action. When you’re trying to snap photos of players in action, try to be on the same level as the players - faces and emotions always make an impressive photo.
Watch the Background - try to snap photos that don’t have cluttered backgrounds. Lots of random people or other distractions in the background are bad for sports photography. When cluttered backgrounds can’t be avoided, choose a vantage point, as snapping the players with the field as background is usually better than anything else.
Keep a Steady Horizon - as much as possible, try to keep your camera levels with the playing field, especially if you’re on the ground level. This will improve the quality of your sports photos by a considerable amount. Don’t panic if your photos aren’t leveled with the horizon. The next step will even things out.
Use Image Editing - another essential step in sports photography. Post-processing is what allows you to transform your good photos into great ones and get them ready for the newspaper, website, or for whatever else you need them.
