There are several accomplishments that I consider important. One is the successful completion of military service. The two years I served in the 2nd Infantry Division was an unparalleled experience that cultivated me with duty, respect, courage, integrity, and discipline but most importantly, the determination to pursue my goals assiduously. The other one is completing my Capstone project in which I interned at the EPA region 10 to investigate the corporate social responsibility in the sports industry and what motivates sports teams to adopt sustainability. Subsequently, I worked as a sustainability intern at the University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics Department. I learned that the sports industry has greater potential than any other industries in terms of social influence considering millions of loyal fans that actively follow sports teams. Comprehensive policies that require strong initiatives towards achieving sustainability could revolutionize the way in which the industry operates and influence other industries. Considering the spatial and temporal scales, it is imperative to cultivate mutual understanding and cooperation among different stakeholders as well as to bridge the gap between the science community and the public. Concurrently, meaningful initiatives and regulatory policies are necessary to forge a sustainable society such as the one that incentivizes renewable energy resources and divests fossil fuels. The government sector plays a central role in formulating and implementing such policies.
