The Calvin Knights football team has been undefeated since 1879. How is this spectacular feat possible? It has to do with the fact that Calvin does not actually have a football team. And I for one, believe it should stay that way. Despite the many sports fans at Calvin who crave one of America’s favorite past times, the school has yet to assemble a team.…
During chapters four through six both Gene and Phineas went up and over with their rational decisions, which led to one person happy and others hurt. These three chapters weren’t as good, in my opinion, as the first three but didn’t make me want to stop reading the book. Three things that stood out in these chapters were; the drastic change from Gene, Phineas’s shirt being put on by Gene, and giving in and helping Gene’s domination. Our main character Gene has changed a lot from the first three chapters to now in the book. During chapters four through six Gene cared a lot more about his appearance and did everything he could to better himself.…
“In this lifetime your don’t have to prove nothing to nobody except yourself, and after what you gone through it you haven’t done that by now it ain't gonna never happen. ”-Fortune This is a very well known quote from the movie about Rudy, the football player that was willing to try and work his hardest to make it to the college of his dreams, Notre Dame. Rudy’s family never believed that he would make it to Notre Dame. As rudy was a child, he grew up watching the college football team Notre Dame play.…
Moeller Football With a tradition like the Archbishop Moeller football team, it is easy to see why they have had the success that they have had. With their grueling conditioning, tireless preparation, and endless support from the students of Moeller High, they have managed to have 52 winning seasons, every year when equipped with a senior class. Friday’s at Moeller High School are unique to any other school in the country, the hallways are electric, the fight song blares on the announcements, and everyone is ready to attend the big game later in the day. Students can be seen pounding on lockers, running plays of the opponent in the hallways, and trying to fire up members of the team by tackling them into walls.…
In this book A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the personalities of the characters Gene and Phineas are greatly changed throughout the story. For a friendship to be “true” there must be shared loyalty, respect, trust, and honesty or it will ultimately fall apart. Gene and Phineas in this book develop traits such as honesty and trust but that is ruined by Gene purposely making Phineas fall out of the tree. Gene was worried that Phineas was to much competition for him to deal with. He was so paranoid about his future and outcome at the school that he was willing to jeopardize his friendship with Phineas and even Phineas’ life.…
Throughout the novel, Phineas creates moments of illusory placidity to conceal the truth about the impending war, by equating games to war. Phineas yearns to avoid the war, and in order to do so he constantly forms games for Gene and the other students, as an escape. Rather than admitting to the illusion of tranquility, Phineas views games as self-accomplishment and pure entertainment, where there was always victors, never losers. In contrast, war always has a loser. During the summer session at Devon, there was a sense of peace and relaxation.…
Unfortunately what critics lack to admit is that normal student’s face these same issues, being involved in on campus clubs and other ordeals those normal students face no one truly has a lot of time to get a job. Athletes have built in connections that non-athletes do not have, so being on an athletic team is by far more advantageous then simply being a student. So why should student athletes be the only students benefitting monetarily for their hard work (College Athletes). No one is enslaving nor, “forcing these athlete-students to play football. Don't hand me the garbage about it being their only opportunity in life.…

Poetry allows for writing to reveal transitional work and in this case the transitory connection between internal conflict and the will to grow. Louis Jenkins’s “Football” serves as a model for this effort. While the poem is about football and difficult choices, it disguises as the internal battles of the speaker as well. A notable take is how Jenkins guides the readers’ attention to the speaker and his confusing decisions he presents as a quarterback. Jenkins has the readers unknowingly focus in on the speaker himself and these odd comparisons and disconnecting ideas within his words.…
He describes his involvement in sports with such passion and insight unlike his traditional schoolwork which can be described as nonexistent. It was not until much later that Graff understood why sports was more compelling than the traditional academic work. The two were actually similar. Both required deep levels of understanding, critical thought, weighting different kinds of evidence and even the ability to debate and creating an argument. When discussing just how similar school and sports to Graff draws the comparison that sports are “more compelling than school because it was more intellectual than school, not less” (Graff 438).…
Of all the aspects of high school, participating in sports is a mutual interest of the students. High school sports are events where students can showcase their talents, learn valuable life lessons, and stay active in their years of adolescence. “In The Case Against High School Sports,” Amanda Ripley argues that high school sports should be terminated because they are expensive and prioritized over education and safety. The author argues that high schools should get rid of sports because they are too expensive.…
A basketball team in Texas was down by two points with seconds left. After two steals and a half-court buzzer beater, they win the game. However there is more to high school sports than the intense playoff games. High school sports do more for students’ than give them a varsity letter. High school sports are beneficial to a students’ education in that they teach time management, develop social skills, and improve a students’ grades.…
In today’s world, people are constantly competing to be better than their peers in almost every situation. In each competition between people, there is always going to be one clear victor. Sure, the victor may have emerged solely from the competition, but he or she may still not be better than everybody else. It is how they carry out every opportunity for greatness that determines if they can be considered “the best”. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Finny is motivated to be the best in the school through his sports and his ability to charm his way out of difficult situations.…
Sports is a big aspect of high school life, especially the sport of football. The films The Blind Side, Remember the Titans, and Friday Night Lights, all revolve around the sport of football and how it manages to change the lives of the athletes. Among these films, the main themes I will focus on will be on the impact of being in a team and the influence an authority figure has on the athletes’ lives. I will begin with examining the theme of being a part of a sports team and how much growth it can have on an individual. At the beginning of the Blind Side, Michael Oher was extremely reserved and did not know how to play football.…
Unit Paper 4 When people think about the institute of education, most people think of academics, but there is another factor that influences the lives of students and the education system as a whole. Sports play a big role in many schools across America. Sports and these institutes go hand in hand, with almost every high school and college offering some sort of sports team. College sports can bring in quite a bit of revenue, making it to some, a priority above other important necessities and programs in education.…
