Athletics have played a large part in my four years of high school. The lessons I have learned on the field, my personal growth, and the friendships I have gained impact many aspects of my life inside and outside of sports. The opportunity to play sports in high school has greatly affected my life and I am grateful I was able to be apart of great teams throughout my four years.
While playing sports, not only does an athlete have to manage an often filled schedule of practice and games, but also an academic schedule. I joined the nordic ski team. The first few weeks on skis I fell again and again, often face planting into the snow. The beginning of the season was very discouraging however, with much practice, a dedicated coach, and very supportive teammates, I learned how to ski. That winter I fell in love with a sport and this year, my senior year, I got on skis the first day of practice and could keep up with my teammates. Being able to see and feel my improvement in skiing showed me that hard work and perseverance do pay off. The encouraging and friendly atmosphere that surrounds nordic skiing, not only within my team, but also from other schools at races, gave me the confidence to continue skiing and to enjoy it. It did not matter how many times I fell, I got back up, often with the encouragement of another racer beside me.
High school athletics has also introduced me to amazing people. From coaches to fellow players, the sense of camaraderie that comes with high school sports is one that I will never forget. Interest in the sport is what drives me to sign up, however, my excitement for daily practices comes from my teammates. Getting together with fellow students who love to play a sport and being able to share a couple hours with them advancing our game makes all of the hard work worth it. Teams build off of eachother and I am so thankful that I have been able to be a part of that beauty for four
