Betting on sports is something that has been around for many years. It is not until recently that it has been popularized on the internet. This allows for more people being able to get involved in sports betting. The average sports bettor ends up losing money because the bookie, the organization or person who takes the bets, takes what is called “juice” on every play. Juice, also called rake, is the percent that the bookie takes on each bet. This is typically somewhere between 5 and 10 percent.There is a way to beat this and be profitable in the long run, but you must be disciplined, patient, and you must have an edge. While I do agree that most people do have a decent amount of patience, this type of patience is much harder to train.This patience requires the ability to pass up on the big primetime NFL game that you want to bet on because there isn’t any value on it. This patience require maturity and a constant strive to be better. Patience is the only thing that keeps you from blowing your entire bankroll on a single game. You must have patience and the ability to step away from betting. With every bet you make, you must think about the long term. As a friend once told me, “Betting is a marathon, not a sprint.” To develop this patience, you must gather some experience first and this is arguably the hardest part of becoming a profitable sports bettor. If you want to be a successful sports bettor, you must be able to have the patience to pass up games that don’t present good …show more content…
Without this step, you are basically throwing darts in the dark. You could be successful, but the chances of you being successful consistently are near zero. You need to find an edge and be able to tweak it. This will require some work and this is the step that requires the most effort. You will have to put in countless hours of looking over stats, player injuries, betting lines, and coach reports. You will have to create statistical models that predict different outcomes of games. The models will have to be able to win 55% of bets at even odds in order to be noticeably profitable. You will have to be able to tweak the model and each model will take at least a year to gather up enough data to run properly. The different type of models include: spread, game totals, and money line. Once you get these models up and running, you will then have to keep spending long hours to maintain their profitability by tweaking their formulas. Models are not required, but almost every successful gambler uses at least one. If you are sports betting without an edge, you are flushing your money down the drain. There has never been anyone in the history of modern sports betting to be profitable long term without a model. You have to be dedicated to the craft and you must be willing to put in the hours.
