Time seems to slow down. The clock slowly counts down. Everyone watches, the suspense is overwhelming. Three, two, one……. Enraged people yell and scream, streaming down the stands and into the street. Windows are smashed, rocks are being thrown, and other hazardous things. Police vehicles are everywhere, and innocent civilians are being hurt. All because the cities’ sports team LOST. Fans everywhere are extremely committed and connected to their sports teams. But sometimes, fans go a bit overboard. Sports fans take sports way too seriously. One reason that sports fans take sports too seriously is sometimes angry fans riot after their team loses. Back in the sixth century, chariot racing fans in Constantinople were enraged when some racers

When quoting or paraphrasing directly from the article, be sure to include the paragraph citation for easy reference during class discussion. 1.Quote a sentence (or two) from the article that best indicates the author’s main argument. In Adrian Mack’s and Miranda Nelson’s article, “Vancouver Hockey Riot Is a Symptom of a Larger Problem” the authors explain that the one of the main factors instigating the Vancouver hockey riot was that the fan’s loyalty to the sport “…exceeds far beyond a natural and healthy spirit of competitiveness or an appreciation of the beauty of the game itself.…

Why were black people segregated from baseball? Today many of the legends and greats we think of were African Americans, and it’s crazy to think they were excluded from the MLB just sixty years ago. They were segregated from anything you can think of at the time, and sports weren’t excluded. No matter if you were an Olympian athlete or a baseball all star chances are you’d end up with a dirty low pay job. So rather than give up the sport they loved and performed well at, they created the Negro Leagues.…

Imagine being at church in the middle of service and someone walks through the door in a Football Jersey, with face paint and a foam finger yelling and cheering loudly right in the middle of the pastor’s sermon. A football fan behaving as if he was at a football game at a church service would definitely seem out of place and even be seen as offensive to some. Your location at any given time should directly influences the way you behave. People at church have one set of values that control how they behave and football games may have a completely different set of expected behaviors. As taunting and cursing may be tolerated at a football game when a player messes up, it definitely would not be accepted at church if the pastor misreads something or messes up on their sermon.…

"Being a sports fan is a complex matter, in part irrational but not unworthy; a relief from the seriousness of the real world, with its unending pressures and often grave obligations.” (Richard Gilman np). Gilman captures the true essence of sports fans in his quote because he explains how complex fandom really is. Becoming too invested in a sports team may lead to psychological and physical issues due to hormonal changes, emotional spikes, severe stress, and increased media attention. Despite their potential adverse effects, however, sports may also lead to a sense of community well-being, a common language, a safe atmosphere, and the exhilarating gratification of success.…

Last Wednesday, I was lucky enough to attend a Rangers vs. Penguins hockey game at the renowned Madison Square Garden. Jerseys, hats, and merchandise filled the arena in a sea of blue, as fans poured into the arena. As my beloved Rangers started to fall behind to the Penguins, (in an eventual 6-1 drubbing) I started to exercise my sociological imagination, wondering how these disparate 18,000+ individuals came together to witness a mundane hockey game, and in essence create a social structure like no other. The first sociological term that sprung to mind when pondering this mystery of sports fans is the idea of a subculture present between fans of similar teams. A subculture is defined as a distinguishable group that shares a number of features with the dominant culture within which it exists while also having unique features such as language, customs, or values.…

For a century it has been noted as "the all-American pastime", where families go to spend quality time and show their pride for their home state. Games bring people together in a supposed "happy" occasion. On the contrary, for many Red Sox fans this pride and togetherness has brought about violent retaliations over losses. Fans even crowd the streets to destroy property chanting "Reverse the Curse" in the celebration of a win! Dare a Yankee fan venture outside, they take the risk of developing physi-cal injuries, or worse, death.…

Essay Question #1 – Sport and the Sociological Imagination Throughout history victors and their fan bases have always been known to celebrate extensively, often times with violence. In ancient times and even as recently as World War II, conquering armies would lay waste to their opponents cities after defeating them. While it was not as common in more recent battles, armies such as Genghis Khan’s in the 13th century and the Ottoman Empire in the late 13th and early 14th centuries were famous for pillaging towns and villages after conquering them as well as raping the women. Nowadays these displays, while not nearly as dangerous and horrific occur in the sports world at least once a year. For example, on June 15, 1990, when the Detroit Pistons…

. Youth sports have really turned into a shell of what it used to be. Sports are supposed to be fun for the kids, with competition, but not an overwhelming amount of it. The kids need the competition, for it was David A. Feigly, PhD, of the Youth Sports Research Council at Rutgers University, who said “True sportsmanship cannot exist unless there is an honest desire to win” (Robinson 19). Part of sportsmanship is putting in the honest desire to win, not just being a fair athlete.…

Reason one is that sports fans can cause injuries. The start with, people can get vital injuries if the fans team loses and they go out and wreck everything in their path. Next, some people can even die when fans go on riots or just attack the other team's fans if the other team wins. Also, when a game is going on, the town or city will put extra police on duty because their is a likely that there will be a riot by the losing team and police can hurt people or even get hurt. There are several different types of sports fans and how they act during a game varies on how much they know or care about the sport they are cheering for. Specifically there are three types of fans that seem to be the most common; obsessive, “band wagon” and the part-time fan. The first type of fan that I mentioned is an obsessive fan otherwise known as the die-hard fan. These are the fans that have a favorite team and truly care about how the team will do throughout the entire season.…
