The ministry was bifurcated into the Department of Youth Affairs and the Department of Sports under 2 separate Secretaries in April 2008. According to the Youth Affairs and Sports Official website, “The role of the Government is to create the infrastructure and promote capacity building for broad-basing sports as well as for achieving excellence in various competitive events at the national and international levels” (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, 2015). The Sports branch of the Ministry is called the Sports Authority of India, and its objectives include talent scouting at micro level and nurturing talent towards excellence, training & international exposure, support training with science, , monitor and enhance performance with a scientific evaluation system, training and preparation of national teams, sports infrastructure development & maintenance, maintenance and up gradation of 4 stadia complexes and a shooting range in Delhi, and to produce coaches and physical educationists of high caliber in different disciplines of sports to broad base sports (Sports Authority of India, n.d.).
