Nearly every sporting contest has a favorite and an underdog. The favorite is the team or player expected to win and the underdog is expected to lose. However, sports do not always play out as expected. Players and teams that were an afterthought work together and pull off upsets that shock the country. Upsets such as this serve to inspire people because they demonstrate on a larger scale that seemingly insurmountable odds can be overcome. Sports help to inspire us by showing us our full potential as human beings. For instance, “Sports showcase the very best within us. It shows us the will to win. It reminds us that anyone with a common goal can find ways to work together. It demonstrates the power of the underdog and the folly of underestimating our opponents” (Symmonds 5). Sports are a microcosm of the struggles that we face every day, so it is an inspiration seeing the struggles be overcome by the players on the field. Perhaps there is an applicant for a manager position at a local business. He may not be the most qualified candidate and he may be considered an underdog of sorts, but just as what happens in the sports world, he may overcome the odds and get the job.
