The history of fencing dates back close to five thousand years originating in both Japan and Egypt. In fact, in Europe the general rules of fencing were used even further back close to fourteen thousand years ago! They would use blunted sabres and would use those for sword play. Fencing then became more and more popular in Italy towards the 15th century. Schools were made to teach fencing which then became increasingly popular in England, France, and Spain. This is how the origins of fencing have come around through history.
How Fencing has changed to the present day
Over time the official sport of fencing has changed through many different outlets. One of which is that in fencing there are three different forms of the blunted sword. Those three forms of the weapon are the epee, foil, and sabre. Fencing is regulated so that only a fencer would face a single competitor. In fencing there also is a uniform regulation which includes a face mask and protective suit. There also is a regulated playing field which both fencers would need to play on. Fencing is an official sport in the Olympics and has world championships each year. With the Olympics and world competitions throughout both the 20th and 21st century, legends of the sport have come about.

The skills for this sport are both physical and mental, and crucial for the success for a fencer. Those that fence normally are small and relatively light. This means that fencers are quick on their feet along with being agile and fast. Other physical traits that they have are that they are great hand eye coordination and most importantly balanced. Mentally, fencers need to think quickly while at the same time being very precise with their actions and reactions. Focus is also a key to fencing
