Cylindrical in shape, these bones consist of a shaft of compact (cortical) bone and are longer than they are wide. Spongy (cancellous) bone is found at the expanded ends, covered by a layer of compact bone. There is a central medullary cavity. The femur or metacarpals would be examples of long bones.
