Background Information:
HAAD is a 7:0-year-old male. His parents report understanding 80% of his speech, while teachers and other listeners understand less. His teacher referred him for a classroom observation by an educational speech-language pathologist (SLP). The observation resulted in a referral for a full communication evaluation.
HAAD’s teacher reports that he is “doing fine academically” in all subjects. She states that he has many friends, but his classmates often tease him, because they struggle to understand his speech. She also reported that HAAD is often asked to repeat himself during class and sometimes, he replies with, “I don’t know.”
HAAD said his first word at 18 months old, with consistent 3-4 word utterances present at the age of 3:9. His mother has rapid speech, but his parents report no concern for his ability to understand spoken language. They also reported that physical development, i.e., crawling, walking and self-feeding, was normal.

It took him 5.5 seconds to produce the “puh” sound 20 times. The normative rate for a seven-year-old is 4.8 seconds. There were no other functionality concerns with his oral or facial structures.
Hearing
During the hearing screening both of HAAD’s ears failed to respond to 20 dB at 2,000 and 4,000 Hz. The normal hearing limits for children is 15 dB or lower at each frequency presented, therefore he should schedule an appointment with an audiologist for further evaluation.

The conversational speech samples showed no concern for expressive language.

The conversational speech samples showed no concern for receptive language.
