Transcription Assignment
Spoken conversation between individuals always has preset rules that are socially learned and acquired. Who's turn it is to speak, how someone is speaking for another person, and what is being spoken about all impacts a conversation and leads or misleads conversations in a specific direction. The "simple" details of a conversation are what make the entire conversation and give it different types of context.
The conversation that I transcribed took place at my job in a tutoring center. There were three speakers in the conversation. Two of them were the ones narrating the story while the other was the listener. I simply told them about my assignment and they talked very freely. The two speakers who are doing the majority of the talking weren't exactly taking turns all the time in the conversation but adding on to what the other said or redescribing what the other said to make the situation clearer. There were definitely some overlaps in the conversation when one speaker saw that the other was struggling to explain; they jumped in to continue the story. When the two stopped speaking for a moment, the third speaker who is mostly listening and being told the story put in short comments about the narrative so far. Despite interrupting each other to tell the story and explain the details of the narrative the conversation wasn't messy because of this. The conversation still flowed smoothly and the narrative was told in order. Reading through Ochs, I thought that the two speakers in my transcription may not have told their narrative in chronological order but this wasn't the case. The narrative actually fit together really
