Split Complementary

The show titled Split Complementary shows a collection of recent works by artist Dianna Frid and Richard Rezac in conjunction with a variety of objects from the DePaul Art Museum’s permanent collection. Rezac’s work in based on sculptural pieces and drawings while Dianna Frid central focus is on mixed media. The objects in the permanent collection vary from books and photographs to historical artifacts. The exhibit explores the idea of juxtaposing the work of both artists while adding the objects from the permanent collection to add meaning to the works of both artists. Split Complementary is setup through the first two floors of the museum. The first floor is split into one large room with several pieces and one smaller room adjoined to the primary display room. The second floor of the gallery is split into a similar arrangement with the major difference being an additional corridor of pieces that are next to the two main rooms. Rezac's piece Untitled (12-09) made in 2012 features a sculpture made out of aluminum, wood, and pigment. The sculpture is composed of four distinct forms all attempting to be representations of everyday forms or objects. Untitled is hung on a wall in the corridor on the second floor of the gallery. The piece was made using graphite, paper and adhesive. The process she utilizes in constructing the work follows a meticulous order of rubbing graphite on paper strips of varying lengths and widths and mounting the paper directly on the wall. She places the pieces of paper to form a large rectangle on one of the wall in the gallery on the first floor. By using the graphite strips on the wall, the lighting in the gallery creates contrasting lights and shadows that reflect off the surface.     A layering technique was used letting the colors peek around each other and create an abstract still life.     Nijedka Akunyili Crosby’s mixed media exhibition Predecessors, being showcased at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati Ohio from July 15th to October 1st of this year, is composed of work completed in the past five years including pieces of the same name, Predecessors.
