Title: Splintered

1. As an avid reader I have read a multitude of books of all different genres. . I have experienced an innumerable amount of worlds and a multitude of characters with various characteristics. Lately, I have been in a reading slump, not craving the need to read an excellent book with an outstanding plot and well developed characters. However, when assigned to obtain an IR book for English class I decided to read Splintered by A.G Howard which had been incessantly recommended to me by a friend from church. Honestly, I was extremely wary, unsure about the Alice and Wonderland retelling as often times I find fairytale retellings to be dull and monotonous. - Alyssa admits her feeling to Jeb, despite him not remembering all that they went through together while in Wonderland.
- Morpheus shows up to Alyssa’s house in his bug form and informs Alyssa that there may be more trouble to come.
3.The reason A.G Howard wrote Splintered was to give a new interpretation of the classic story we all know as Alice in Wonderland.
4. The intended audience was for teens and adults who, as children, read and experienced the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland. A.G. Howard’s spin on this classic tale allowed for us to re-experience parts of our childhood.
5. Alyssa, the main character, in Splintered by A.G Howard changed the most throughout the novel. As, at the beginning of the novel Alyssa desperately tries to differentiate herself from her mother believing that if she isn’t like her mother she will be able to fit in. However, while in Wonderland, after Alyssa grows wings she wonderingly questions, “Why is it the longer I’m here, the more I feel like I belong (Howard 274)?” This growing self-confidence that Alyssa displays while in Wonderland is caused by her ability to truly embrace who she really is without any judgment. Without travelling to Wonderland Alyssa would have constantly forever feared becoming her mother, but being able to defeat the curse allows for Alyssa to no longer have to worry about the effects that being herself could cause. When Alyssa returns to the human world, Alyssa’s previous insecurities are forgotten, as she stands up to her life-long bully. In Splintered, we witness Alyssa go from a girl afraid to embrace who she is in fear of becoming like her to mother to her becoming comfortable with who she truly
