On Monday after receiving my splint I immediately put it on and decided that I would drive home wearing it. I noticed I was having a hard time maintaining a cylindrical grasp on the steering wheel. Upon looking at the steering wheel I noticed that in certain areas the wheel was bulkier so I positioned my hand on a smaller section of the steering wheel. Once I moved my hand I could get a better cylindrical grasp and I felt safer driving. I would say the areas …show more content…
I feel like I would wear my splint more and do more activities if the splint was not pinching the anterior side of my forearm. Also, if my splint was to be shortened the rounded edge would not be stabbing me in the biceps when I performed elbow flexion greater than ninety degrees. I also feel as if the splint needs to be cut down some on the radial side. When donning and doffing the splint I feel like it is too tight of a squeeze for me and the radial side is where I experienced the majority of my pain. I would also want my thumb hole to be slightly larger. I was able to perform thumb opposition to my fifth digit but I did experience mild pain when doing so. I know myself well enough to know that if I was given this splint to wear for a medical condition I would not wear it. I would be the most noncompliant patient due to the pain over my radius, CMC joint, and MCP of my first …show more content…
Luckily, I have never had to wear a splint or a cast and I honestly don’t think that I could do it especially if I was experiencing any pain. Through this assignment I have gained a greater respect for people that have to wear any type of brace, AFO, splint, or anything that limits motion in an extremity or limits any functional activity. I really enjoyed learning about splinting and it is something that I would like to become good at in the future. In the future if I do give a splint to a patient pediatric or adult I am going to ask them multiple times before they leave me if that splint is causing them any pain, redness, or irritation. We will go through every motion of every joint before they leave to make sure they are not experiencing any pain. I am going to do my best to correct the issue before that patient gets out of my sight and I will more than likely follow up with them the day after I give it to them and periodically. I want my patients to be compliant and I want to know in my heart that I have went above and beyond for that patient to get them the best to where they don’t have a really good excuse for being noncompliant. I want to set these patients up for success and if they refuse to wear the splint that is on them. I also know that some clients both
