There are many types of inhalation equipment and devices on the market. I decided to research and compare the Spiriva Handihaler with the other bronchodilators. To find out why it was chosen for a resident where I work, who has C.O.P.D. I want to develop a broader understanding of the medication. It is important to be aware of the benefits or disadvantages of the medications that I dispense, in order for me to be thorough, and efficient in my job duties.
Spiriva HandiHaler
Spiriva HandiHaler (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) has been modified to include the generic and brand name. It is manufactured by Boehringer-Ingleheim (1). The Spiriva HandiHaler consist of the inhalation device and the capsule. The Spiriva capsules are a light green, gelatin capsule. The capsules are filled with a dry powder containing the medication called Tiotropium bromide. The capsules are only to be used with the HandiHaler for oral inhalation, and never to be swallowed. It is to ensure that the person receives the right dosage of the COPD medication. The medication travels deep inside the lungs for full benefit, therefore minimal drug is absorbed from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Another question was why choose a short or long acting medication? For mild COPD, a short acting bronchodilator is used as a PRN. For moderate or severe COPD, regular use of one or more long acting bronchodilators is recommended. They are more effective and convenient than the short-acting inhale bronchodilators. There isn’t any sufficient evidence to recommend one long-acting agent over another. The medication or combination therapy, depends on the individual.
