Spirituality in Counseling In 2 Corinthians Paul stresses the importance of being in Christ, Paul stated: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here.”(2 Cor. 5:17) Spirituality in counseling is acknowledging that spirituality is one of the most important components of the human being, perhaps the most important. And therefore it is important to incorporate spiritual help while counseling a client, it is essential that a counselor helps a person in whole, in every aspect of their human existence, which includes mental, psychically and spiritually. From a Christian perspective, the counselor should look at Spirituality as the main part of the persons aspect, according to Grudem (1999) “We have not only physical bodies but also immaterial spirits, and we can, therefore act in ways that are significant in the immaterial, spiritual realm of existence.”(p.191) As Christian counselors, we need to understand the importance of the clients spirituality, and we must evaluate their behavior also based on their spiritual existence. Collins (2001) stated that: “Christian spirituality is a process of becoming increasingly Christlike” (p.234) The purpose of Christian Spirituality is to form the Christian more like in the image of Christ, and as Christian counselors, this means to help the client to view themselves as Christ view them.
