Spirituality In Sandra M. Schneider's View Of Religion

Improved Essays
Spirituality can be perceived as a personal attitude of first discovering the truth about God, who is God and why should one worship that God. One strong belief in the truth about God would lead one to walk a life in righteousness to practice one’s faith. If one remains unaware of who one is worshipping- one is unable to analyze the kind of spirituality and rituals one is expected to participate in. By this I mean, using the Christian tradition as my center of focus, I can refer to the example of either a Christian or, a Catholic who is expected to attend the church service, Mass and confession regularly. An example, contrary to this would be of one who is happy with being a seasonal church goer on certain days like Christmas and the Easter. …show more content…
Schneider’s’ view on the idea of Spirituality that spirituality is not to be considered “as a research discipline.” Though I consider this view to be partial in its implementation, it is good to be reminded that, a theologian can feel led to exploring and finding spirituality as part of one’s personal interest and research. This is to claim that one who is spiritually inclined toward finding God in other faiths, would evidently try researching on spirituality as a research task. For a Christian who grew up among other faith communities, like myself, the topic of spirituality has always led me to find God’s presence around me, the people, nature, and events. By this I mean, among the categories of media, dramas and films, literature that includes poetry and songs- always inspired me to resonate with the characters and understand the Christian doctrines present in multi linguistic films, like the Bollywood. This is relevant to the claim “one can read Nature as Lectio Divina.” There would be several examples of films and dramas that I can mention here, but the reader might not be able to watch these films, since most of the films, songs, poetry and drama do not subtitles in …show more content…
By this I mean, one is required to surrender one’s will and desire before God. Humility involves forgiveness and, confession of one’s wrong doings. My personal view is that outside of the Christian faith, the idea and definition of spirituality varies. While talking to a close Indian Hindu friend, who mentioned the techniques of Meditation, I learned that it is one of the healthy ways of keeping oneself calm. Through this Meditation, one can keep control over one’s emotions, especially anger and revenge and it allows one’s center of focus to be god or god’s presence. However, in the case of Hindus, it can be a deity. This is to claim that the theory and practice of spirituality involves understanding of god but probably does not allow communication with God as found in the Christian discipline. The chief reason being that the mantras involve name of deities and not the Triune God. My personal argument against this spiritual practice points to the doctrine of Trinity and, interference of God’s grace. If grace had not been involved, Apostle Paul would not be blinded and transformed after listening to Christ on the road to Damascus.
Christianity recognizes all persons as created in the image of God and, its followers as the members Body of Christ. The other reason being that Christian spirituality is strictly reserved to manifesting the love of Christ by loving God and one’s neighbor. The

    • Sanctification gap is a gap of knowledge, teaching, and practices of spiritual transformation between the real spiritual life and ideal spiritual life. The five typical responses to the sanctification gap are pretense, despair, programmatic and personal solutions, moral formation, and ministry activism. Pretense is pretending that one’s spiritual life is going smoothly, even though one feels the emptiness due to sanctification gap. Spiritual disciplines are something that take a lot of work, they are things that don’t always come easy, and they often require practice to develop. As a believer, it is easy to just assume the role of a mediocre Christian who often overlooks spiritual growth, thinking that going to church every Sunday is enough to effectively grow in ones walk with Christ. Through study, it becomes obvious that Sunday Christianity is not enough, it takes work as a Christian to truly change and grow, and to make that work happen, we have to develop disciplines that will take root in our lives, so that Christ will ultimately change us and grow us as we seek to follow and please him. This paper is going to be a book review of Donald S. Whitney’s book, “Spiritual Disciplines of the Christian Life”. Whitney dives into the subject of spiritual disciplines and looks to scripture bringing up many key points that make the easy to understand for the reader and he gives practical understanding for the different disciplines.…

The principal beliefs of Christianity being the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the nature of God and the Trinity, the revelation and the salvation, influence the life of adherents by providing the core foundations to what they are to live their live based upon. Variants of these beliefs are expressed through differing religious perspectives such as Catholicism, Anglicism and Pentecostalism.
