Religion has a different meaning to every person, for some it is their reason for survival and the will to keep fighting when they hit an obstacle in their lives. Martel uses religion in his novel Life of Pi to show his readers the significance faith in God has on survival and the will to live. The author uses religion to help the readers understand Pi as the main character before he is introduced the trauma he deals with at sea. Martel also uses faith and religion as a means of survival for Pi during his time fighting for his life at sea. Martel also uses religion to allow Pi to give his life meaning after the trauma he endured.

In the beginning of the novel, Martel uses religion and spirituality to build up Pi’s connection to God. Martel uses religion to ensure the readers understand his relationship with his three religions: Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. In the novel Life of Pi, religion plays an important part in Pi’s life; he uses his spirituality to survive even when he feels like dying. Religion is the reason Pi survived the toughest moments of his life. The author uses religion to help the readers understand Pi as the main character before he is introduced the trauma he deals with at sea. Martel uses religion to describe Pi’s passion and gives the readers a better sense of his personality. Religion is also used as a coping method during Pi’s time at sea, and plays a major factor in Pi’s survival. The author also makes an emphasis on religion after the trauma Pi endured as a way for Pi to remember he is worth more than what happened to him.
