Spirituality And Mediation Paper

Mumber and Reed (2012) suggest that there is a difference between religion and spirituality, and I believe this to be true. Where religion seeks to create conformists to a belief system, spirituality is the connection one has been themselves and a higher power. To me, this step also represented another opportunity to reflect on who I am and how I have treated others during my life’s journey. I know there is a direct connection between spirituality and mediation and it is through the isolation process that leaves the world and its issues on the outside, I have always been close to god and the universe. Furthermore, I realize that spirituality also has nothing to do with God at all but empowering the inner self to maintain a level of peace.

In his semi-autobiographical book Blue Like Jazz, Donald Miller explores his journey in seeking a relationship with God. It serves as a reflection on his search for identity, which is a challenge for Miller because he was raised in a society that “ditched” critical thinking, soul searching, and the importance of growth in Christianity. Miller touches on subjects involving the identity of God, confession, sin, and the Church. His various interactions with friends and his experiences in his youth help the reader uncover Miller’s views on specific Christian rituals and beliefs.…

Religion is a default that people turn to - to step outside their norm, to fill a type of need and satisfaction. As Armstrong demonstrates, people use religion and practices to help them find meaning in their lives, when she sates “a poem, a play, or, indeed, a great painting has the power to change our perception in ways that we may not be able to explain logically but that seem incontestably true” (5). If one is willing to free up his/her mind, he/she will then be unable to find oneself in an open place where new ideas and experiences are welcome to enter. People alter their state of awareness in order to change how they think and feel. By doing so, this guides individuals to grow.…

True and False Self The most interesting comment made in Immortal Diamond is that, “our ongoing curiosity about our true self seems to lessen if we settle into any successful role” (Rohr, p. 9). Like many people, I have fallen subject to defining myself based on my successes and still never really finding true happiness. I always thought that being successful - having a prestigious job title, a big house, nice things etc, would lead to happiness. However, I have always found myself searching for more even after all my successes, never really knowing what that “more” was that would make me feel complete.…

father would never intentionally give his children a dangerous animal. He wants to give his children only what is good. And then Jesus gives the “how much more” argument. For thousands of years, care of the inner self was primarily the domain of religion. The advent of modern psychology in the late 1800s put this care in new hands; today, approaches to integrating the worlds of Christianity and psychology span a broad range (Entwhistle, 2010). Some individuals or factions in each field of expertise view the other with contempt, viewing spiritual doctrine and psychological research/practice as incompatible. Others pick and choose aspects to sprinkle into their own field, such as psychologists who see therapeutic merit in prayer & meditation apart from the beliefs that ground them, or Christian counselors who develop or borrow therapeutic methods based on similarity to Christian disciplines without attention to empirical methodology…

Spirituality can be perceived as a personal attitude of first discovering the truth about God, who is God and why should one worship that God. One strong belief in the truth about God would lead one to walk a life in righteousness to practice one’s faith. If one remains unaware of who one is worshipping- one is unable to analyze the kind of spirituality and rituals one is expected to participate in. By this I mean, using the Christian tradition as my center of focus, I can refer to the example of either a Christian or, a Catholic who is expected to attend the church service, Mass and confession regularly. An example, contrary to this would be of one who is happy with being a seasonal church goer on certain days like Christmas and the Easter.…

Fee (2000), in his essay “Exegesis and Spirituality: Completing the Circle”, proposes that exegesis and spirituality are important tasks that should be done consciously and simultaneously when one reads his Bible. He identified the preconceived notion of Christian’s today about studying the true intent of the authors, the true meaning of the passages written by them, the historical and cultural context, and the people it is addressed to, have nothing to do with spirituality; when in fact it (spirituality) is or it should be the ultimate goal. Fee further explained his point by defining what spirituality and exegesis mean, then gradually lead us into the relationship of the two topics. Spirituality, as the author states, is a gift from God and is God who leads and empowers us in our maturing relationship with Him. Without the dwelling of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and souls, the true essence of living, teaching and sharing…

The increasing concern in incorporating spirituality into mental health is a step forward to an ever growing and diverse field. However, since spirituality is believed not to be scientific, it has contributed to the gap that continues to be present in clinical trainings as an “effort to prove that psychology should be taken seriously as a rigorous, empirical, and respected discipline” (Plante, 2009). Two survey report studies related to spirituality and therapeutic treatment discovered that “92.2 % of the family therapy students they surveyed reported that they had not received any training focused on how to integrate spirituality into clinical practice” (Prest et al., 1999).…
