In Spirited Away, the director Hayao Miyazaki provides a perspective of the conflict between traditional Japanese society and its modern counterpart. Furthermore, the film is also a commentary of the main characters efforts and challenges in growing up. It also comments on the cultural concerns that occur not only in Japan, but can be related to other countries in the world.

Throughout the film we learn about the many challenges of growing up. This refers to Chihiro, who grows significantly as a character from the start of the film to the end. Chihiro as a character can be paralleled to Japan moving away from its cultural traditions. For Japan to stay involved with the rest of the world, they almost need to evolve and leave many of their original traditions behind. She is going on this journey to ask Zeniba to forgive Haku. We see that along the journey she has changed from being a sulking selfish little girl, to being a selfless and responsible young woman.
