Between the years of 1601-1602, Shakespeare created a famous play known as Twelfth Night. During Act 2, scene 5, Malvolio reads a letter that Maria, who is pretending to be Olivia, wrote and quotes these famous lines: “…In my stars I am above thee, but be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em.” This paper will focus on the meaning and concept of this quote, examples of all three, and how Chihiro from Miyazaki’s Spirited Away and Nausicaa from Nausicaa from the Vally of the Wind not only fall into the last category, but also how they differ from each other while falling under this concept. People who achieve greatness do so to satisfy a need. At the beginning of the movie, she and her parents are shown in a car driving towards their new home. However, they come across a tunnel that leads them into the spirit realm. While in the spirit realm, Chihiro’s parents begin devouring food that was left at a booth and before Chihiro knew it, her parents had turned into pigs. The events that followed caused Chihiro to become separated from her parents and found herself to be alone in an unfamiliar situation with no direction to go. During the film, the audience sees Chihiro go from a helpless child to taking every action to find and rescue her parents and leave with them. Through the help of Haku and several people she befriended while staying in the spirit realm, viewers see the struggles she faces and how she managed to overcome them regardless of how afraid she may have
