Spirit Week Research Paper

“Five, four, three, two, one! We’ve got spirit, you’ve got none!” are the shouts of Konawaena high school students. It’s spirit week and many students are excited, but is spirit really all that important. While it makes school enjoyable, spirit week does not contribute to any sort of academics and distracts students from learning. This article will discuss how even though spirit week has some upsides to it, it really isn’t important.

First of all, the biggest problem with spirit week is that it distracts students from learning. There are three ways spirit week distracts students from learning. One way this is done is through planning. For spirit week, students are encouraged to dress-up everyday in coordination with the theme of the day.

For example, on the first day of spirit week, the school had break dancers perform for the school, on the third day, instead of working in advisory, students were sent to the field to watch the women’s flag football game, and on the last day of spirit week, all classes will be cut short to provide time for an assembly. These events are not only non-academic, they actually take away from educational time. Additionally, if spirit week is to promote pride in the school, shouldn’t the themes be tied to the school in one way or another. The themes for this year’s spirit week, with the exception of, “Everyone in Green,” day, have absolutely nothing to do with this school, meaning that spirit week was just to create competition as well as controlled chaos. What is the point of coming to school in pajamas? This only further proves that spirit week is not important. If spirit week were important, wouldn’t the themes be more along the lines of, “Wear your future college colors,” or, “Wear what you want to be when you graduate.” These themes would make spirit week seem less pointless, that this school promotes its students to think and prepare for the future. While there are reasons to support that spirit week is not important, there are also reasons to support that spirit week is important. One of these reasons will be voiced in the next

The American revolution for the most part fulfilled the “ Spirit of ‘76 ” which was the spirit entailed inalienable rights, self government, and the idea of all men being created equal. Slavery was abolished in some states, women were given new roles in society and monarchy was also destroyed and replaced by democracy. One way that the spirit of 76 was fulfilled was by slavery being abolished in many states. The American Revolution was a chance for slaves to fight for their own independence. During the war The Continental Congress in 1774 called for the complete abolition of the slave trade and in 1775 Philadelphia Quakers founded the world’s first antislavery society.…

Last year in Georgia a school was able to save nearly $800,000. They were able to do this because they saved money on transportation, heating, and other power fees ( Four-Day School Week: Pro or Con?). The article Four-Day School Week: Pro or Con? stated what some of the schools used they're saving money on. They provided the school with better teaching equipment, hired teachers who required more money, and we're able to give better accommodations. My last reason is that students improved they're grades and test scores after stating the 4 day school week.…

Throughout my four years at Horn high school, I have noticed that many students at JHHS show an abundance of school spirit. For example, for every football game the student section decides what to be worn. My friend Brett made a twitter page for the students of Horn to tell students when to wear their senior shirts or Last Friday, we played Mesquite we were told to wear white and to splatter the skeeters. In addition, on pep rally days we have a certain theme that we follow. Two themes that we’ve had this year was a USA theme and neon theme.…

There should never be down time in our classrooms because our teachers should be applying a variety of their teaching skills. Therefore, I feel that each semester, students should have an interactive town hall with their teachers to suggest fun activities to better distribute the lesson plans and standards to ensure that the student body is receiving every drop of knowledge needed for them to succeed in life. Thomas Edison once said "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." When first reading this quote, I had to sit back and think about it because it left a message. Why would you give up on yourself when you’re so close to the finish…

Five or Four Days in School When it comes to our students’ education, we always should pay extra attention to the decisions that we make, especially if the decisions that we’re going to make are weighty and could have an impact on our students’ educational performance. In Jaclyn Melicharek’s article “Four-Day School Weeks: The Rule to Skip School,” she makes several claims against the four-day school policy, which is a convenient policy that seems to pervade our schools nowadays. She believes four-day school policy is ineffective and rather harmful to our students, teachers and staff because it reduces our students’ educational performance, deters the academic value that our students are obtaining and shatter the lives of the teachers and…

In the years following the 1916 Easter Rising the GAA, according to its many historians, including Padraig Púirséal and Marcus de Burca, claimed that the GAA had provided a great number of the men who had played an active role during the insurrection. As much of the literature available from this time is in some way sympathetic towards the rebels, it is hard to discover whether or not the Association did support the insurrection or not, despite the GAA having a non-party political stance for nearly a decade and a half previous. On Tuesday of Easter week 1916, the day after the insurrection had begun, Martial Law was proclaimed across Ireland, from which the holding of matches and sporting events was strictly prohibited. This lead to the activities of the GAA being suspended.…
