I didn't realize that playing and teaching these young adolescent minds would soon be the major I would be studying. I’ve chosen lots of areas to study throughout high school, but I’ve always kept changing my mind. For example, I’ve gone from wanting to be a marine biologist all the way from wanting to be an entrepreneur. I never could figure out what my heart…
Spirit week. Everyone is running around blowing horns and wishing the team and captain good luck. The football team captain and starting player. Mason Jacobs. Girls are head over heels in love with him.…
A recap on my life: Spring Semester has been very busy, but it has been such a great Wolf ride-this week in particular. So many things have happened recently in my life that I just want to thank everyone who has taken the journey with me! The big highlights of the week include: · Honored as ODK's Top Ten Freshman (Only ten students of the entire Freshman class at UMD recieve this honor) · Selected as an Images Tour Guide! I will now have the opportunity to show perspective students why Maryland is the right fit for them and why I love it so much · Attended Tea with Title IX- as a member of the Title IX Board Student Adivsory Board, I was invited to attend Tea with Title IX where I was able to discuss different policy improvements regarding Title IX on campus (huge shout out to NAN and Taylor for putting on a great event)…
I live in Staten Island, and this borough can be considered more infamous than the other boroughs. Having the most substance abusers and crime rate, Staten Island has often been looked down upon. The St George Day fair really showed that there's more to Staten Island than drug users and crime. Seeing the smiling faces of local residents of various backgrounds was a wonderful experience. Although the table I worked at was small, I met a large variety of children.…
I enjoyed the Freshman Cultural Event. Although trying to get everyone together to take a picture was pretty difficult, when we were done, we had a good time. When we got to the cafeteria for our dinner, I was shocked. We had scalloped potatoes, steamed vegetables, and a slice of meat. Let’s not forget the cheesecake.…
Introduction and background The Spirit Level is an exploration of the impacts of inequality on society. The book argues that inequality has a causal link with social ills, including but not limited to obesity, teenage pregnancy and crime. It also argues that everyone benefits from greater equality, even the rich. The authors, Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, have academic backgrounds in epidemiology.…
What am I going to do with my life? What am I going to major in? What do I want to be? Many people ask themselves these questions, especially students who are attending college for the first time. I was one of those students.…
From taking communion, having a candle lighting service, and ending with fireworks this event has meant so much to me. First, I love this event because the location is beautiful from the surrounding nature; this makes me feel god’s presence every day. Second, the fire pit with s'mores and sleeping under the stars; I can’t get this experience at home, but I can come here and have this every night. Also, having a chance to hangout with friends everyday is a good perk to going to the event. The overall point of why I go is on the night of the candle lighting service.…
Introduction As it pretends to my interests in child welfare, there are a lot of reason why I picked this branch in Social Work. Throughout the whole broad range of Social Work the one passion of mine is child welfare. When learning of child welfare I heard the good and the bad. The different types of people I will meet.…
Chez Evans KSP 220W Volunteer Reflection I served my time volunteering at a few of the different diversity events located at our University. These events included two of the LGBT Tea Talks, the Fall Hall Concert, and Turn Up Tuesday. All events were exciting, they included a wild array of fun and brings out perspectives from other students, a lot of the events to bring out the creative energy and exotic ideas of others, most importantly they inform students and staff. The Tea Talks that I attended are events where the speakers discuss and soothe ideas with a complicated scenario, or a topic where most people feel uncomfortable with.…
Attending on-campus events can bring that little bit of sunlight into someone that is may be having a rainy day. Especially, some of the first-year students who are still dealing with the…
For the first chapter, I believe the clarification of how to define mysticism was central to the argument. Carefully defining the term is important because making distinctions helps the reader understand what mysticism truly is. By focusing on what is observed, one gets a better understanding because it removes bias from interpreting concepts. Also, mystical experience is shaped by what the mystic brings to the experience, therefore acknowledging the environment and physical effects helps categorize and define what a mystical experience is. Overall, by focusing on observations one is able to understand and organize what a mystical experience is because it allows one to avoid bias and see the true commonalties experiences…
I attended A Night in Africa Event on April 1st. It was a great opportunity to experience the elements of the various African cultures. I feel like in America we focus on the American black experience, but often forget that we have immigrants straight from Africa who are very in touch with that unique culture. It was very cool to see so many different students representing their country of origin. It was a great opportunity to learn about cultures I knew very little about, and to see UND students perform their talents.…
Name your favorite books, authors, films, and/or artists. (50 word limit) My favorite book is Niccolò Machiavelli 's The Prince. Originally, this was a reading assignment, but I read the book out of personal interest. The author introduced me to rhetorical devices such as logos.…
Selecting an Event Over the course of the semester, our class was told to participate in a community event different from our own culture. It was actually very hard deciding where I should attend, for the fact; I knew very little of what was available in the area. When it came to figuring out what type of event I wanted to attend I knew that I wanted it to be somewhere that I knew that I could learn from to help with my future practice in social work. I eventually decided on attending a Coffee, Cake and True Islam event hosted at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Center.…
