Throughout my four years at Freeburg I have been involved in various clubs and organizations. Currently I am involved in six clubs, Student Council, Spirit Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, and Service Club. While I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the clubs the two in particular that I have enjoyed more are Student Council and Spirit Club. Throughout my senior year I have help presidency's in both of these clubs. Student Council came with many responsibilities, between the morning announcements every morning, leading meetings, and all the events that we put on I was kept extremely busy. While my year as the Student Body President was for sure more important and held to a higher …show more content…
Since Hunter was a player on the football team I was left to man the crowd at home games myself. I always recruited some help but it was a tiring job running up and down the bleachers all night trying to direct the crowd to cheer. Due to our football team being extremely sub par football games made it hard to keep the fan section into it. Volleyball games were a different story, the team was good. Due to the great team we had it led to a great fan section. The fan section always got wild in the stands it was so much fun to lead the students during those games. We began a tradition after each volleyball game in which we would have the entire student section go to McDonald’s., There were a few times where we probably had sixty people in the restaurant. There were many times where we got screamed at by the workers and once they even threatened to call the police. (Still trying to figure out why) Also during the year we filmed and created a video to enter into an IHSA state wide competition. The video was great and gave us exposure to the Chicago Sports Network in which they entered us into their own state wide …show more content…
We had a long way to go and we were concerned on how we were going to get past all the slave catchers. I had a very smart and methodical group, it was around 7:45 by now so we decided we would hide in the woods until it got dark. So we sat and waited out the sun. Once it had finally gotten dark we began our slow walk back. We hugged the tree line of the railroad tracks walking nice and carefully. Through the trees we saw many slave catchers walking up and down the streets. Once we finally arrived to the Freeburg power plant we were deep into slave catcher territory. Our group was at even higher stakes due to having me tagging along with them. Earlier in the night we decided if we ran into trouble I would split off because the chasers would follow me saving the group. We walked carefully past the power plant and hid behind the fence at the apartment buildings. All of a sudden we heard a bounty hunter scream “There he is!” we ran like hell. The group split, I was on my own. I ran around the apartment buildings, across the street, behind the plant. I had two hunters right on my tail, all slaves we instructed to wear hats, the hunters would have to pull of your hat to capture you. I

It was a strenuous but worthy journey for slaves. There were abolitionists whose homes served as safe houses for fugitive slaves. An issue during this time was that “kidnappers and slave catchers” would take escaping slaves back to their plantations, back to slavery. As slavery expanded throughout the antebellum South, slaveholders experienced a growing phenomenon of slaves running away. Fugitive slaves were slaves who escaped their owner and left without authorization, commonly heading north towards the free states and Canada. Fugitive slaves and their experiences were diverse from their motivations to their characteristics. No single fugitive faced the same challenges and there was not set way to face these challenges, although there were common ways of doing so. This essay will examine the trends in the experiences of fugitive slaves, arguing that most fugitive slaves were young males without a family who were motivated by inhumane treatment, being sold away, and the hope of freedom to run away and overcome…
