What if you were sent to an island, all alone, with nobody there? Just imagine a cold, freezing island, with no shelter and in the middle you, just you, all alone. I could barely survive a week but never could I survive a Bear attack. Cole Mathews survived both, but not just a week, but a full year! Spirit bear is a book by Ben Mikaelsen where you follow Cole Mathews on his journey living for a year on a remote alaskan island. The main character in the book as you can probably tell is Cole. Cole is a character that is hard to relate to, realistic and also unlikable at first. Cole was a very violent kid. He was so strong and tough and he beat up a boy in his grade named Peter. He smashed Peter’s head on the floor so much that it caused serious brain damage like the fact that Peter now has a stutter. …show more content…

It was cold, icy, even a touch of the pond would make you feel like your veins froze, snow trickled from the sky. It was only Cole and one other thing on the island, the spirit bear. Cole saw the bear during his first week on the island. Something happens that startled the animal and caused the bear to attack Cole. After the fight that caused a lot of damage to Cole he went to reconverti back at home with bad damage to his right arm but had to come back to the island. About six months later Peter's parents had realized that Peter was suicidal and Cole heard the news so his idea was to bring pier to the

One of the best examples from the book is when he brutally beats up Peter driscal. The reason he beats up Peter is because he was angry and furious Peter snitched on him for robbing a hardware store. He beat him up so badly Peter has speech problems, vivid nightmares, and worst of all suicidal thoughts. Cole even burned down his shelter because he was alone and angry with all the people who who planned to send him to the island and also because he wanted to escape (page 25). Every time Cole gets angry and can't handle a situation he just finds someone or something to rage at and lash out on trying to forget the pain he's enduring instead of addressing it and solving it.…

These tragic events help transform life, in sometimes drastic ways, that it has the power to mold and often determine one’s destiny itself. In the book, The Other Side of the Bridge, Mary Lawson incorporates this by demonstrating how tragic events continuously play a major role in shaping the destiny of the central characters. Despite the fact that traumatic events scar Ian Christopherson and Arthur Dunn for life, these incidents help them achieve what fate has set in store for them. On the contrary, such events cause a drift in the lives of two brothers, Jake Dunn and Arthur Dunn, defying whatever had been predestined for them.…
