Today the Oxford American English Dictionary the term “spinster” is defined as, “an unmarried women, typically an older woman beyond the usual are for marriage.” However, when the term "spinster" originated in the mid-1300s, it simply referred to “a woman who spun thread and yarn” (Merriam-Webster). One possible way “spinster” became associated with the “crazy old maid” may have come from the German work “spinnen” (Curzan 170). Spinnen, which means both to spin thread and spider, but when used as a verb it means “be crazy (daft, nuts)” (Spinnen: Langenscheidt). According to Anne Curzan, this could be have led to the term being used as an insult for older women, by referring to them as “spinsters” (170). Working Thesis: The term “spinster”

It is truly amazing just how simple it is to stop doing the things that have been proven to work. It has to do with the human inclination to become bored and dissatisfied and to begin looking for something different. If people would remember that the foundational things in a relationship must be maintained, there would be far fewer marriages that end in divorce. In the dating season two individuals learn to love each other and cherish every moment they have together. They talk for hours about little things, they notice all kinds of things that others never see.…

Love Locks This past summer I travelled to Tofino and had the great, good fortune to find myself exploring the Wild Pacific Trail. Over 9 km long, the trail winds along the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island. Waves crashing on the rocks below, giant cedars towering overhead, it is unquestionably an authentic west coast experience. Inspired by the breathtaking vista, I stopped for a few minutes to savour the view. As I gazed out across the mighty ocean swell, my eyes came to rest on a single, solitary padlock chained to the protective guard rail.…

This year the Annual Literacy Festival was titled Strange Bedfellows and was mainly about Politics and Literature. This title was chosen to be the theme this year because of the new upcoming president that will be elected and all of the politics that are taking place right now. All of the participants this year were chosen based off of the fact that they all connect to “poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and have attempted to make sense and art out of political actualities” (Old Dominion University Libraries). The festival took place from Sunday September 25th to Thursday September 29th at different locations on campus. The event that I attended was held at the Baron and Ellie Gordon Art Galleries, I really enjoyed where the event took place because…

I believe that out of the three dimensions of sexuality the video “What you don’t know about marriage” addresses the psychological dimension. The video describes aspects, feelings, and experiences that we may feel that contribute to the success and failure of marriages. In the video Jenna McCarthy describes how certain behaviors and actions, such as men doing household chores, contribute to the wives becoming more attracted to their husbands, creating a chain reaction. Where the husband attracts the wife, the wife is more open to providing more sex, more sex satisfies the husband and is genuinely nicer and appreciative-like towards the wife, the wife is happy towards the attitude, and the relationship all together sustains to be a happier…

Ageism “reflects a deep-seated uneasiness on the part of the young and middle-aged for growing old.” I both agree and disagree with this description. In my opinion there is so much prejudice about all age groups; teenagers, young adults, middle-age, and elderly. Middle-age and elderly may look at teenagers and young adults as rebels and too young and foolish to know what they want. While teenagers and young adults may look at older people as incapable to do things, and rude.…
