“But Spinks is evil! What teacher would suggest an educational trip to the Globe Theater for spring break?!” I continued to mope.
My mom continued to toss things into my suitcase, considering I was protesting by refusing to pack myself. I decided to press the issue further by adding
“A loving mother would take me to Florida with the rest of her children!”
With an exasperated sigh, my mom put down the shirt she was folding and turned to me.
“Jena,” my mom finally acknowledged me, “you’re going to London with your class, you’re going to be grateful for the opportunity, and you will have a great time.”
Then she gave me the look. You’re familiar with it. You know, the one that says “I birthed you so just try to defy me and see where it gets you.” So I did the only thing a mature adult could do in this situation. I burst into tears.
“Well, I’ll just leave you to your packing,” my mom said as she started to leave my room, “I’m sure you can survive one measly little trip with your freshman English class.”
So that was the grand finale to the weeks of pleading. My fate was sealed. In less than 24 hours I would be boarding a plane and venturing to miserable

My older sister Emmaline is doing some online shopping for the perfect swimsuit to wear in Florida. Backstabber. My little sister Eva is no better, as she tries on multiple pairs of sunglasses. Betrayer. Rick is doing unrelated spring break activities and focuses on the movie. I silently thank him for being tolerable. I sit myself down on the opposite side of the couch where my parents are lounging. They have offended me greatly by purchasing the family flight deal of only 5 tickets and instead of splurging for one more, are forcing me to go on a miserable “vacation.” I watch the movie zoning in and out. When it is finally over I get up to crawl into my bed and try forget about the events of tomorrow, which will commence at 5
