Spinal Bifida
1. Definition:
• A birth defect that affects the neural tube.
• The neural tube is the embryonic structure that ends up developing into the brain, spinal cord, and the tissue that surrounds and encloses them. In babies diagnosed with spinal bifida, the neural tube does not form correctly and is left open, causing defects.
2. What are the causes/risk factors:
• Experts have not figured out what the exact cause of this disorder. Most think that the link is genetic or environmental causes, but as of now it is unknown
• Risk factors:
Affects most females
Seen more in whites and Hispanics
Obesity in mothers
Increased temperature in mothers
If mother is taking anti-seizure medication
Family history
Mother suffers from a folate deficiency
Mothers who suffer from diabetes

• Risk for impaired physical mobility R/T neuromuscular impairment
• Risk for infection R/T broken skin
• Impaired comfort R/T tissue inflammation/skin irritation
• Delayed growth and development R/T defect causing physical disabilities
• Risk for impaired parenting R/T unrealistic expectations of baby/child
8. Long term problems associated with condition/complication:
• Most complications occur in infants that have a severe form of spinal bifida such as, myelomeningocele
• Physical and neurological problems may develop
• Fluid in the brain (hydrocephalus)
• Development of skin problems, such as latex allergies
• Gastrointestinal issues
• UTI
• Infections in the tissue surrounding the brain such as meningitis
• Learning difficulties/problems with language and reading comprehension
• Little or no feeling in legs, feet, or arms making it harder to move these specific body
