Spina bifida is a genetic birth defect that affects the development of the spinal cord. In babies who contract spina bifida, parts of the neural tube fail to develop or close properly, causing defects in the spinal cord and in vertebrae. This occurs when bones of the spine do not form properly around a baby’s spine. The exact cause of this defect is not known. However, expert think that genes and environment have an effect. If a mother has one child with this defect, it is thought that another child from the same mother could contract spina bifida easier. (WebMD, 2005)
