Spina Bifida Research Paper

We all have disparate opinions about the way someone looks, talks, or dresses. For example, Anna, my sister is usually looked at through a repulsive angle. She is looked at this way because of her congenital birth defect, spina bifida. When I look at Anna, I see a passionate individual who has managed to constantly battle challenges that have been placed in her life. Although, the story I intend to tell is who Anna really is, and what we have done for each other. Spina bifida is a central nervous system neural tube defect that affects one's ability to ambulate, have the use of sensation, and have proper cognition. The disorder comes in various forms of severity, and Anna has the myelomeningocele form. Unfortunately, Anna has the most severe structure. Despite …show more content…
For my senior project, I hosted a National Kidney Walk benefiting the National Kidney Foundation. The foundation raises awareness on kidney disease, prevention for kidney disease, and treatment plans. To begin, I set up a website that included access to a tab where one could donate or sign up to walk. In order to spread the word, I put out flyers, coin collectors, and organized a fundraiser at McDonald’s where I raised about $200. The walk was hosted at Hugh MacRae park on November 5th, 2017. My goal was to raise $5,000, but I only raised $3,000. However, the real objective was being able to intrigue people on an issue that does not get much recognition. The best moment of my project was the feeling of joy, relief, and love when all the participants sat around and listened to my speech about my purpose of the walk. Oddly enough, I struggle with speaking out to a large crowd, but individuals who signed up decided to share their stories too. Their stories made me feel more connected to the them, not as anxious to speak, and charitable. The surrounding of people made the experience so much more personal and

Spina bifida occulta is the least severe neural tube defect and is sometimes known as hidden spina bifida. Spina bifida occulta is generally defined as “a malformation of one or more vertebrae, or the bones of the spine” (“Spina Bifida Occulta,” n.d.). The gap in the spine is small and as a result, the nerve cells are generally not damaged. Therefore, a child with spina bifida occulta does not usually have life-threatening symptoms. Symptoms of spina bifida occulta usually include foot deformities, motor deterioration, and poor bladder control.…

This is the rarest type of Spina Bifida. The spinal cord is not affected. There are only mild disabilities. A sac pokes through a hole in the spine that contains the coating that protects the spinal cord, and also contains some spinal fluid. The final type of Spina Bifida I am talking about is called Myelomeningocele.…

Society places its’ social normality’s on just about everyone, not even aliens can escape the conventional idea of green skin and foil hats. Nancy Mairs is no stranger to this as she divulges her scuffle with society in her personal narrative, “On Being a Cripple”. Through her strong use of pathos, she takes the reader into a reoccurring battle of suffering, rejection, acceptance, and happiness with herself, her family, and society. Family is a word that can take on multiple meanings and forms depending on the person being asked. Mairs’ narrative mentions her family many times, she sees them as a support system, a solace, and at times, the source of her stress.…

I volunteered at the Forest Mall for the Tootsie Roll Drive. This organization provides service for those people with intellectual disabilities. What I physically did while volunteering at the Forest Mall was hand out Tootsie Rolls outside to the people that donated money. I also would kindly ask people to donate as they came in or out of the mall. I kept a kind and loving smile on my face to welcome anyone who was willing to donate.…

Through our project, we raised awareness of the need in our community and the resources that are there to help, such as the Good Shepherd Center. By our research and service to the community, I believe that we made an impact on some of the women that were recipients of the purses and the effort behind them. I also know that the shelter is appreciative of the service we performed. This project was a blessing to me because it showed me what an impact we can make in our community with something as small as a purse. It’s a reflection of taking something that is simple and making a difference with it.…

Last year, I had the chance to work with an organization called Santa’s Little helpers. It's an organization that raises gifts to give to children in orphanages, hospitals, foster care, ect. It was the first time it was coming to the Portland area, and the person in charge had allowed me to help out and be part of the team. A big problem was how we were gonna have the event run smoothly and set up an incentive that would make others want to donate. Since the event is on one specific day (like a blood drive), advertising was very crucial because we needed to make sure we had enough donations/gifts in order for it be a success.…

In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…

For my service project I organized a group of volunteers to help at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's annual Out of the Darkness Walk. The walk took place on September 24th at Highland Park in Washington. In total there were 402 walkers that raised approximately 18,281 dollars toward suicide prevention. As volunteers we helped set up, passed out food, helped with the coloring station and cleaned up. On January 27, 2011 I lost my brother in law to suicide and it was devastating.…
