Spina bifida is a birth defect, this condition results in an “incomplete closure of the vertebra around the spinal canal (New Health Guide 2014)”. Many individuals do not know they have this condition because they may not encounter the side effects which include nerve defects. These nerve defects may make it difficult for you to walk, and you also may not be able to control your bowl movements. Having difficulties walking may leave an individual in a wheelchair, in braces, or you may have to use crutches. Someone growing up with spina bifida may not always be able to do the activities their peers do. This includes not being able to participate in physical activities, not being able to drive, and some may not even be able to get ready on a daily bases without assistance. “The visual signs of spina bifida are a sac or cyst, rather like a large blister on back, covered by a thin layer of skin” (shine 2001). There are two types of this condition, myelomeningocele, which is the most severe type that may leave an individual paralyzed, and meningocele which may affect the spinal cord yet is not as severe. This condition is typically diagnosed before an infant is born, yet many times it will be diagnosed after. During the second trimester of a pregnancy, the mother will take a blood test which will dictate any conditions her child may have, such as spina bifida. If you are older, this condition can be diagnosed
