Edward Taylor, a Puritan Poet, wrote a poem called, Spider Catching a Fly. In the poem he describes a good Puritan man as a 'pettish wasp' and the devil as a spider. The devil with his web of lies and desception has caused the Puritan man to 'fall foul therein' for the Puritan man got tangled up in the web without meaning to be. The devil has the man in a situation where he could falling prey to the devil and unltimately dying, however 'thy whorl pins did not clasp/ Lest he should fling/ His sting' the devil doesn't want to get close to the man because he is a loyal Puritan and in God's grace, therefore fighting against the devil and thrashing about with everything he's got to ward the devil away long enough to escape. The devil dares not come close to God when he is spiritually with the loyal Puritan.
