On March 29th. I attended the Bucknell Diversity Summit workshop: Applying the Bystander Intervention Model to Social Change. The panel was able to introduce and relate the topic to the audience through Bucknell’s mandatory Speak UP program; the Speak Up program was a series of mandatory workshops educating the Bucknell community—specifically first-year students—on ways to prevent sexual misconduct as spread awareness for said issue. The Speak UP program urged students to follow the positive bystander model.…

From being Awards Captain of the Hall-Dale robotics team to preparing to present in front of a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate to teaching kids how to build robots, I have participated in a wide range of activities. I look up to great leaders such as Winston Churchill, and attempt to emulate many of the same qualities he displayed. On the robotics team, I fulfill the role of Awards Captain, who is responsible for coordinating the creation of all awards content, which includes written essays, a video and a presentation.…

As officers proceed through the ranks of the United States (U.S.) military they must not only demonstrate the capability of executing a given task but also the ability to provide insight on issues and events to assist in the formulation of plans and options. Their advice shapes the manner in which a decision maker interprets a given situation and ensures an informed decision is made. While the number of senior leadership positions within the Department of Defense (DoD) is relatively limited, most officers, including the ones selected for senior command, will serve as strategic advisors to both military and civilian leaders. Developing an officer to become a strategic advisor involves creating and/or sharpening a number of internal attributes,…

Journal Reflection of the Sexual Assault Seminar This service learning project had a unique start since the class voted on the most popular topic which was determined to be a physical fitness activity at a local elementary school to combat obesity. However, a classmate mentioned a current issue on campus and his concern of the awareness of sexual assault and its implications. This concern grew into a proposal to conduct a campus-wide seminar to discuss sexual assault in order to increase awareness. This idea and the groups’ vision led to a large scale campaign to combat sexual assault by disseminating a message of “No More”, which is a mantra that denies any acceptance of an act that could led to or suggests sexual assault.…

In the summer before eleventh grade, I experienced multiple large moments in my life. I got my first job, passed my drivers test, participated in the Minnesota All-State Band, and attended the Scott Anderson Leadership Forum. All of these events were life-changing, but none altered my outlook on life as much as the Scott Anderson Leadership Forum, also known as SALF. When the weeklong forum began, we were divided into eleven groups of 10, with each student representing a different school.…

My Personal Leadership Philosophy and How it has Developed As a leader I am very unique. I hold strong personal values in the areas of trust, respect, and responsibility. I believe that no one person should be responsible for someone else, but that we have to grow up and learn to take care of ourselves. Prior to this course, I perceived leaders as people who told a group of people what to do in order to accomplish a task. When I was put in a leadership position I was always effective, but I never really took the thoughts or feelings of others into consideration.…

My response to sexual assault stands out among the personal accomplishments of which I am proudest. For over a year, I struggled in therapy to learn to control the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I took solace in the relationships I forged at school: I revered my professors and met several like-minded peers who became friends. Despite everything, I made the Dean’s list for that Spring semester. I devoted myself to my work in the Writing Center, even volunteering to visit undergraduate classes as a guest lecturer.…

I was born and raised in a Christian environment and as a believer in God. I was homeschooled my whole life up until freshman year of high school where I moved on to attend a private Christian academy. Being homeschooled helped prepare me to assert my faith for the “real world” where it would be assessed. Though at times being homeschooled was the most difficult part of my life- being someone who loves meeting new people- it was a felicitous decision which allowed me to grow divergently from others and I am forever grateful for the sagacious mentality I acquired in those years.…

Based on what I learned during Module 3: Self-Improvement, I feel the inspirational section of Transformational Leadership (TL) is this most important concept. Of everything we talked about, this concept immediately struck me as something that I’ve seen my peers perform well and something that I could improve upon. For a long time, I have found my efforts to inspire my subordinates, peers and supervisors have been hit or miss. According to the Self Assessment of Leadership Behavior my overall leadership capability is strong; however, I now know that I must focus specifically on my ability to inspire.…

The first time I stood in front of a crowd of 2,000 undergraduates, I could feel my heart prepare to leap out of chest. I had talked in front of crowds of 100 or smaller in the past, but the pressure was different. The associate dean of students was not in the wings listening and my face had never been a front for such a serious topic. On August 25th, 2015 I was one of the primary facilitators for the sexual violence education presentation named “Bear Pact” for the class of 2019. I had the necessary education to speak on the topic with passion and devotion, having spent the past two and a half years as a member of the University Health Services Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP).…
