Back to School Night
Good evening, and welcome to Back to School Night!
As we start the new school year, it is important to reflect on why we are here and what we hope to accomplish. The Catholic school has, as a primary mission, the faith formation of our children. It is up to us, in partnership with you, to address matters of faith. Tonight, I want to assure you of my commitment to the faith formation of the children. The Gospel values and our faith identity will pervade all we do.
As a catechetical leader, I work with the teachers, and with you, the parents, to make sure our school curriculum is an effective tool whereby students gain basic knowledge and understanding of our faith. Daily religion classes expose students to the critical

As parents, you play a role in this mission as well. Our children need to see us model a faith-filled life at home, seven days a week. Our obligation to attend Sunday Mass should be lived every week. Our children need to experience family prayer time, and devotion to the Blessed Mother, and the saints. The catechetical mission is not the responsibility of the school alone but must be shared equally among us. You are the primary educators of your children. I cannot emphasize that enough. A faith-filled school life must be lived in conjunction with a faith-filled home life. Everyday, children are confronted with a secular world that has drifted into an ambiguous relationship with God. Religious indifference is the term used in the National Directory for Catechesis (2005), to describe this serious threat to our schools and ourselves. In our personal searches for spirituality, we cannot lose sight of our faith and fall into a New Age Spirituality. Our school will support you in your effort to be active participants in our …show more content…
In our Catholic school the teachers are working, within the context of our curriculum, to expose children to age appropriate catechesis and introduce them to Church doctrine. This fundamental knowledge is a critical component to living a life with Christ. There is no life with Christ without a knowledge of the chief teachings that comprise our system of beliefs. In addressing this responsibility, teachers will teach the Creation, the Life of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Mary, the Mother of God, the Church, and the Mass. Teachers will also discuss with students the lives of saints, feast days and Holy Days of Obligation.
It will not be enough for our children to know doctrine and recite scripture. Our children most also recognize the responsibility toward service. In 1972, The National Conference of Catholic Bishops postulated that the service mission of the Church is even more necessary today than at any other time. Service is connected to the gifts each of us receives from Christ. We are asked to do what we can, even small things done with great love can have a lasting affect. Reference Mother

However, it would be better if the author considered some positive sides of having prayers in school like promoting morals and encouraging children to help others. But in general, the argument is stronger because the article talks about consequences of having prayers in real life. The article contains some impressing real life examples that perfectly shows the impacts of having prayers on children and indicates how having different religious thoughts can cause its holder get offended and ridiculed by other children. Also, offering a solution to the problem being discussed can make the argument stronger. “Look at this place, all of you,” Schäffer said to the others, observing the architecture at the front part of the school, “And examine the wonder of this place. Splendid as it is, every one of us can safely agree that it is gleaming beacon to one of those days when the Children’s Paradise was just beginning to make its appearance in the shape as it is to this day. Someday, and I am not sure when, but when the time will come for us to see the Children’s Paradise soaring higher than it ever had, I would like to see ourselves at the forefront of this renaissance. The rebirth of American Catholic Education, its sudden ushering of the Greater American Catholic School System did not end with the beginning of the Republic; nor did it end, when the Great Leaps Westward marked the beginning of the attempts made to expand both Programs all the way to the West Coast. It continues even to this day, for there is much that…

We all believe that Mercy’s identity, as rooted in our mission, is strong: “Mercy High School is a diverse educational community, founded by the Sisters of Mercy, focusing on academic excellence and inspiring young girls to become confident women of Mercy who embody faith, knowledge and compassionate service.” The three pillars of faith, knowledge, and compassionate service unite us as a community, one with a strong identity apart from the other Catholic high schools in Omaha. Riesberg, in particular, noted the richness of Mercy’s faith tradition. He explained that he is able to “buy-in” to it because it envelopes everything we do within the walls of our school, “It is real. It is genuine.…

Ultimately, one would like to see young adults be more excited about their faith, and the religion in which they were raised. Rather than concentrating on the fact that young adults are leaving their faith, it is more important to examine the reasons why they choose to leave. Because it is so easy to overlook some factors that define who we are, it seems as though, today, students are solely defined by their GPA and ACT scores; however, unbeknownst to most others, religion has been a big defining factor in making me who I am today. My parents have always made religion a priority, so naturally, religion, and all that I learned from it, is very important to me. I began my schooling at a catholic grammar school and when I attended a public middle school and high school, I continued to stay active in my church and church community. Throughout middle school, I was a member of peer council; we would meet once a week to discuss topics such as the importance of serving others on a daily bases or how we could use our blessings…

The theology of children begins with recognizing that children belong to God by creation because God's love embraces everyone and we all begin as children (Cully, 1983). Generally speaking the authors Bunge, Rigby and Cully gave descriptions of the spiritual characteristics of children, and how they are enhanced at various stages as they develop. This is a shared view from the theorist Erik Erikson developmental stages.…
