Personal Narrative: The Puente Motivational Conference

Recently my class was given an incredible opportunity to catch sight of life from others points of view. We took a trip to a university that I feel relatively unfamiliar with; Furthermore, I was given the chance to interact with many others that are in the same path as myself. Individuals that are seeking similar opportunities in life for betterment through education. I speak of an event special to my heart, organized by a group of amazing leaders that will guide me into being a successful student and professional. An event that not many have had a chance to experience, but much will appreciate once they understand what it represents. This event is known as “The Puente Motivational Conference”. Held at an institute of high prestige, “The University of California in San Diego.” This Conference is close to me for several reasons. We were given the option to either reach out to another “Puentenista” or go a separate rout and interview a student of the campus. After a long day of tours and information I found myself really admiring UCSD, for that reason I then decided to go forward and conduct my interview with one of the many on campus students. The student I met was one I had spoken with prior to my interview. Her name was Meghan Yap, my tour guide. An amazing intellectual student who is on the same pursuit of perfection that I find myself on. We quickly applauded one others choices and looked forward to following each other’s

I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

On the day of the event, I became hesitant in my choice of attending the lecture. I knew what the lecture was scheduled to be about, but I questioned if I would be welcomed to participate, even with it being open to the public. The atmosphere on campus inspired me. Every couple of feet, the NC State emblem is built into the sidewalk with white bricks on a maroon background. Seeing the different ethnicities of students as I walked to the Talley Student Union was different from what I had become accustomed to with working on the campus of a historically black college/university.…

There are so many dimensions to counseling; guiding students with their academic path, creating an environment where they feel safe and supported, being a counselor and identifying risk factors. Beyond these dimensions however I believe the two most important characteristic when defining a counselor are adaptability and resilience. Academic counselors come across diverse populations and I believe there is no standard process when guiding students. The counselor should actively listen to the student and build a professional relationship in order to build trust. Equally important is the ability of the counselor to be resilient and to teach resilience.…

Restorative Practices: No Limits After attending the 2016 conference in Bethlehem and reflecting and learning over the last six weeks with other students, several things struck me. First, restorative practices can have both broad and narrow applications. Whether working with one individual or working with an entire community, restorative practices has a fit. Furthering the idea of broad applications, another thing that struck me was the creativity of practitioners to integrate restorative practices into a wide variety of teachings. From prison gardens to music classrooms to social media, restorative practices can be, “…A way of being…”…
