Reflective Summary Of Public Speaking Week 4

Improved Essays
I have came a long ways since week four. I have learned so much about preparing and delivering speeches throughout my time in this course. Both Brad, and the DK Guide to Public Speaking book have given me a great amount of knowledge on the topic of Public Speaking. From speech one to speech speech four I have improved in language/style, organization/structure, supporting my ideas, vocal delivery, and physical delivery.
Words are anything but powerless language helps the audience to understand and create meaning. Language can bring people together for a common cause, and language can persuade the audience to act a certain way. In my first speech I thought I did a decent job of using language and style, but it was almost awkward and not

When you are giving a speech there is always a message or main idea that you are trying to get across. The main idea usually has different ideas to back up the main idea. These supporting ideas are what motivates, intrigues, or even persuades the audience. Here is where the importance of appealing to Logos, Ethos and Pathos comes into play. This was one of the most important lessons I gained throughout this past semester is using Logos; appealing to your audience through idea Ethos; appealing to your audience by giving reliable information and Pathos; appealing to the audience´s emotions. In my first speech I tried to do this, but it didn 't play out too well because I didn 't give that support to my main ideas. As time went on I tried to think more about how to appeal to the audience. In my last speech I feel like I was able to support my ideas by putting emphasis on the audience 's emotion while giving them reliable information. This was a huge area of …show more content…
First of my vocal delivery improved tremendously. In my first few speeches I used a few vocal fillers, and lacked variety. But with practice I was able to minimize those fillers by recording my speech and listening to it over and over. While I practiced I tried to use variety in my voice. For example raising my voice or including longer pauses when I am saying something important. In my first few speeches I had trouble enunciating certain words or sentences that were important to the speech. This could be another reason why I struggled with connecting to the audience. My last speech has a lot of enunciation which kept the audience on their toes. I was also happy to see some improvement in the category of physical delivery. I lacked a lot of gestures in the beginning of the semester. Towards the end of the semester I started to use emblems and illustrators. I would use illustrators when I listed examples, and I used emblems when they fit in. I thought I had good posture throughout all my speeches. Eventually I fixed my habit of looking up when I couldn 't remember something. I believe improving in the delivery category improved my speeches

Bush, conscious of his audience, used Aristotle’s Three Ways to Persuade, to aide him in his goal to influence the nation on several levels. The use of logos, ethos and pathos, enabled him to convey a sense of security and confidence throughout America and the rest of the world. Amanda Wilson Professor Leightenheimer English 1102-01 23 October 2017 Role and Pathos: How Eugene Debs Creates Relatability Crafting and reciting a speech can be an incredibly difficult requirement. The main difference between these and, for example, an essay, is that enunciation and delivery can make or break a speech. With this addition also comes extra importance on understanding and reading the responses of your audience to gauge effectiveness. Speeches need to have a form of an emotional pull to them, or else they sort of inadvertently transition to lectures rather than a form of persuasion. Actions can still be carried out in more logically oriented speeches, but that passion to push someone could be lost.…

At the time this artifact was produced, Trump was still running for office against Hilary Clinton and was not yet elected for president. I clearly passed messages on what I am going to inform audiences i.e. set speech purpose, and separated speech major parts developing main points. I also attempted engagement with audiences by asking questions to make them feel they are articulated in the conversation/discussion as the vital component. All of these things are my strengths. Certainly, these aren’t enough strengths to make a speech the best. Reviewing self-presented video going through it a few times, I found out supporting materials were missing, sub-points were not clearly mentioned, and proper transitions were not made to maintain the chronological flow of information.…

Rhetorical Speech Reflection Rhetorical techniques within my speech were subtle yet still managed to enhance the message I was trying to convey; that all firearms should be banned in the United States. I used a combination of rhetorical techniques including; anaphora, hypophora, a mild chiasmus, alliteration, and sententia. Halfway through my speech, I used anaphora when I was describing the different reasons people have for owning guns. This particular method was helpful because I wanted to portray the reasons as ridiculous and repetitive, which paired well with anaphora, since it added to the redundancy with its own repeating sentence beginnings.…

One of them being how easy it was to follow. I picked easy information to understand while still being very important. I gave just enough information so my audience knew what was going on, but not too much to where they stopped paying attention. Another strength being the life in my voice. I had passion about what I was talking about and actually enjoyed it.…

Often, when one party is trying to persuade another party, they will use rhetorical appeals to try and persuade the second party to agree with the point that they are trying to make. Whether their argument is accepted or rejected by the other party can often be affected by how well the first party uses the three types of rhetorical appeals, ethos, pathos, and logos. These three types of appeals can help a speaker achieve their goals of having the audience listen to them and side with their cause. There have been a number of times when each of these rhetorical appeals have personally impacted my own life, and these scenarios have all helped me to better understand just how effective these appeals can be in an argument.…

One of thing things A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking talks about that I want to draw from going forward is forming a specific speech purpose. “Ask yourself: What do you want the audience to learn/do/reconsider/agree with?” (Page 50). This is an idea that I want to keep in mind a lot more before I start writing my speeches. By being able to pinpoint my intentions I believe I will be more effective in making audience laugh or making them consider a certain idea, etc.…

Pathos is the most important part of the rhetorical argument because it truly expresses the feelings of the writer to the audience and easily allows them to absorb the material due to the emotion filled with writing. Pathos is defined as the power of speech, literature, and other forms of expression of evoking a feeling of sympathy and compassion from the reader. The essay will demonstrate how the effective use of pathos will strengthen arguments. Pathos is the strongest of the three rhetorical arguments because it reveals the emotions of the writer, it convinces the audience of the arguments of the author through emotions, and it can acquire the desired reaction more easily.…

We had to pretend we were in that moment of time where the occasion is occurring and give a speech based off of that occasion. I did my special occasion speech on my friends Rachel and Thai’s wedding. I noticed during this speech after watching it, I did have some of the similar and same habits as I did in my persuasive speech. I used my hands a lot, I swayed my body throughout the speech, was very fidgety and used “um” and “like” a lot as word fillers. I noticed I did not have as good eye contact in this speech as I did in the persuasive speech because I had to do a lot of thinking to remember where what was going to say in the next part of the story I was giving.…

The first time I noticed this is at 0:09 in my speech. I think that if I were to stand up and be confident while delivering my speech it would make my performance a lot better. Last but not least I noticed my enthusiasm level almost seemed sarcastic in the very beginning of my speech. At 0:03 in my speech when I was stating my purpose statement, my tone in voice was strange and not exactly as enthusiastic as I could have been. I feel that if I practiced my speech a little more than I actually did, my delivery process would have been much…

While speaking, I have always stood very still in one place. There were some instances during the semester where I would make motions with my hands while presenting, however I still stood very still. I think I had a hard time improving this skill because I was always too nervous to move. Luckily, I have improved on my public speaking apprehension, so from now on I should be able to focus on improving my nonverbal delivery skills. Overall, communication class has helped me improve as a public speaker, which will be greatly beneficial in the years to come.…
