They lose the ability to understand, conclude the meaning, and the evaluation of material that are being said or shown to them. Introducing yourself to someone without being able to communicate is easier said than done. The two main characters, Rye and Obsidian, but more so Obsidian, demonstrated how to adapt to the loss of meaning and understanding. Rye chooses to go by her last name to make it easier for Obsidian to identify and remember her. They had objects which made it more basic to introduce themselves. “… he slipped a gold chain over his head and handed it to her. The pendant attached to it was a smooth, glassy, black rock” (Butler, 1983, pg.412). “She handed him her own name symbol – a pin in the shape of a large golden stalk of wheat” (Butler, 1983, pg. 412). Hope often includes empathy during challenging moments. Hope empower us and make us believe that the future outcome would be favorable. Genuine hope carries us through exciting challenges, difficult times and hope allows people to approach problems with a mindset to success which increases the chances that they will actually accomplish their goals. The two children in the end of “Speech Sounds” definitely indicates hope and the magic hope offers. The epidemic that destroyed the community, or most of it, didn’t harm the two children’s communication abilities. They indeed lost their mother in front of their eyes, but that handed them the opportunity to communicate with Rye and at that very moment Rye found hope in her miserable community. She realized that there is still a light at the end of this very dark tunnel and even in the worst situations, hope can guide us, if we believe in it. Rye is a hopeful character. There were several times where she thought of doing violent actions, but she decided against it. She wanted to kill Obsidian, because she was so jealous that he could read and that’s an ability she has lost. Before her trip to Pasadena, the story mentions how Rye thought of taking her own life, but she gave herself one last chance to see if anyone of her family remained through this devastating epidemic. Rye displayed hope in “Speech Sounds”

Actions speak louder than words, and in Karen Joy Fowler’s novel, We are All Completely Beside Ourselves, she presents many different themes regarding communication and its importance. Rosemary Cooke’s father, a psychology professor at the University of Indiana, suggests that there is a difference between communication and language by explaining that “language is more than just words” (Fowler 98). Fowler agrees with the professor, language is much more than words, but they differ when he argues that “language is the order of words and the way one word inflects another” (Fowler 98). In We are All Completely Beside Ourselves, Fowler suggests that communicating with others can go beyond verbal form. Different forms of communication help us exchange…

It is often said that communication is key to cooperation and in order to be able to communicate properly one must use their language accordingly to voice their thoughts and ideas to others. In the short, science fiction story "Speech Sounds" by Octavia Butler, speech is absent in a society causing disorder amongst the citizens. The short story makes many connections with society and people today in terms of lack of responsiveness and feelings of indifference to others. But while the story directs a loss of speech to a loss of empathy this isn’t necessarily correct. “Speech Sounds” is set in a dystopia and starts off with Rye taking a bus to Pasadena.…

In Plato’s Gorgias, there is a common theme in Socrates’ ideas, where his view of rhetoric has no base on truth. Socrates outlines two forms of persuasion, providing knowledge and belief without knowledge, and applies rhetoric to the latter. He makes this distinction by questioning the use of rhetoric in situation about what is just and unjust, such as, a courtroom. The people of the courtroom must be convinced of what is the most just thing today, there is no possible way they could be persuaded through the provision of all the knowledge about the situation because that knowledge is unavailable to them. Therefore, the court must make their decisions on belief.…

Our earliest ancestors were limited to face-to-face verbal and non-verbal interactions. Then we developed written modes of communication, which we have since digitalized to the point that someone in Beijing, China have have an instantaneous conversation with someone in Reykjavik, Iceland. However, technological advances push farther and farther towards recreating the experience of face-to-face communication over digital means—proving that in-person, verbal communication, underscored by tone of voice and body language, is still the most effective and satisfying way for humans to communicate. I have so far highlighted what I consider two identifying characteristics of human beings: our complex intellectual life and our desire to bond with others. Communication theory is the union of the two.…
