To find out more about Ms. Smith’s job and what it is like to be a Speech Pathologist, I conducted a semi-formal interview. During this interview, I asks a series of ten questions. One of these questions was “Who much schooling does it take to be a Speech Pathologist?” Ms. Smith answer by stating “There are two options in Michigan. You have to pass the national test and have your Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) and your Clinician Competencies with our professional organization (ASHA) or pass the national test, have a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology with a teaching certificate in place of the Clinical Competencies or with Clinical Competencies.” This was something that was very important to hear because now I know which paths I can take and what I will experience along the way. …show more content…
Smith followed with her answer. “I am the traveling SLP and I work with Early On children, ages birth to three, many preschool and Head Start students, middle school students, and kids from three different private schools that are various ages.” I was ecstatic when I heard this. I love working with kids of all ages, but who doesn’t love working with small kids and putting a smile on their face when they do something right or to impress someone. In between questions, I asked a few others like, “What type of speech would you recommend?” and “What’s an average work day look like?” I was also able to ask, “What is the pay scale like?” Her response was, “I only know what I get paid here in the district in MI. Pay can vary from job to job and state to state. The pay scale for school is based on teacher pay with a Master’s. It starts out at $40,000 with a scheduled “step” raise yearly of about

Michigan minimum wage is $8.50/hr and I was only getting $6.25/hr, so I asked if she could fix the issue. She looked more confused than I did. She explained that Michigan law allows businesses to pay minors lower than minimum wage (down around $7.00/hr) and that I should have already been told about this during orientation. This was not the case, during orientation I even asked and the person doing the orientation, they dodged the question, saying something like “It depends on your job, so I can't say as all of you guys have different jobs.”…

I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…
