Speech On Veterans

Decent Essays
When people hear the word hero, they think of Superman or Batman. Even though they are heroes, they do not compare to a real hero that could be living right next door. I am talking about veterans. These people help to keep our country safe. Though most people think that veterans are men and women that have fought in foreign countries and sometimes on our own soil, there are other jobs. For instance, my veteran, Mr. Craig Fresher, served in the Air Force, where he worked in telecommunications. Mr. Fresher volunteered to join when he was eighteen years of age, right after graduating from high school. He chose to go into the Air Force. One reason that he did this was that he was allowed to choose what his job , which was telecommunications.

The question being asked of me is “Why Veterans are Important to Our Nation’s History and Future?” Veterans are important to me because I live with two of them and I have a lot of them in my family. Without them, I wouldn’t know the reason why we have people sacrificing themselves for our country. My Grandpa, Roy Noble, always said that “War is not good but fighting for our country is,” I didn’t really understand that until I realized without them we wouldn’t have a free country. Britain would have taken over and we would have a queen instead of a president, or something like that.…

Veteran: a person who has served in the military. That’s the definition that Google gives you when you type it in, but to me a veteran is more than that. I come from a military family. Words like loyalty and respect are commonly used in my home especially when it comes to describing my father and my grandfather, both veterans who have given up their time to serve this nation. Due to my father serving overseas, I know how it feels to wake up in the morning, walk down the hall, and expect to see a warm smile welcoming you to the kitchen, but instead find that it is not there.…

Veterans are without a doubt heroes, but they are also victims. War has done great damage to our soldiers. PTSD, amputation, depression, loss, and wounds to the body and heart haunt our veterans forever. A normal life for veterans after a war is difficult. Homelessness, lack of jobs, and lack of healthcare for our veterans prevent them from the life they deserve.…

In fact, the idea of there being a “typical” veteran is absurd. Veterans have different backgrounds and come from a variety of places. This is important to remember when dealing with veterans in the VA health system.…

Who can be a hero? Regardless of what most people think, not everyone. If you ask someone to picture a hero they might picture a superhero, celebrity, or famous person from the past. What a veteran means to me. The dictionary definition of a veteran is, a person who has has long experience in a particular field of the military, or a person who has served in the military. Federally, a veteran is someone who has served in ANY war, in ANY branch of military for ANY length of time. If you served in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps or Navy you are considered a veteran. I believe that someone who can fight for strangers , people they don't even know, along with their own family even if they only served for a week, a year, twelve years, deserves more respect than anyone.…

Some people do not know that they are even someone’s hero. When a person has the power to stand strong and fight for what they believe in they too can be a hero. These are the type of people that give others hope and save lives each and every day. You do not have to have super powers to save someone, you do not have to be in a position or a career where the main goal is to save someone’s life such as a doctor, a policeman or a firefighter. Heroes can be everyday people, such as a teacher; who teaches kids the everyday essentials of life to grow and be a better person, a parent; who guides and raise their children and protect their children, and even a janitor or trash man; people that help keep the environment clean for our safety and…
