Example Of Informative Speech

On Friday, October 21st, I presented my informative speech on the history of the sunflower and sunflower oil production. This was my third speech of the semester and my first informative speech. I felt that I had done adequate research on my speech topic and therefore felt confident about giving my speech. In my next speech, I believe that I could improve my use of visual aids, nonverbal communication, and improve my speech time. However, I do feel that there were components of my speech that were good and clearly showed improvement from my last speech. A few of the things that I feel went well during my speech were my organization, summary of main points in the conclusion, and the rate at which I spoke. I feel that I could improve on my nonverbal communication with the audience. Nonverbal communication such as eye contact with the audience has proven to be extremely difficult for me to overcome, because it was something I also felt I needed to improve on from my demonstration speech. I believe I did make good eye contact with a few members of the audience, however I focused on looking at my note cards more than the audience. I have learned that nonverbal communication is one of the most important aspects of a speech because it connects the speaker with the audience. To improve my nonverbal communication for my next speech I will not only practice my speech in front of my family and friends but also ask some of my colleagues if they would allow me to practice my speech and nonverbal communication with them prior to my speech date. My colleague who observed me did express that my use of visual aids could have been better. I appreciated her feedback and after viewing my speech video also agreed that I should have physically used my visual aids during my speech. To improve on that aspect of my speech I will ensure that I practice my speech and practice using my visual aids at the appropriate times during my preparation. Another aspect of my speech that could improve is the length of my speech. My time for this speech was four minutes and twelve seconds, and that is shorter than the five minutes that my speech needed to be. I practiced my speech many times before my speech date, however once I am in front of an audience my speeches tend to become shorter than when I practiced. To guarantee that I meet the time requirements I will not only practice my speech many times prior to my speech date, but I will also add more detail while I am presenting. I think that adding more details during my speeches

Practice makes perfect as everyone has heard this saying before. In the future, I plan on practicing my speeches more by speaking in front of a mirror over and over again to give myself the impression of what I look like when speaking in front of a group of people. Practicing in front of a mirror over and over again will also help me memorize my speech more instead of relying on my note card as often, giving me more confidence while speaking. I tend to use my note card as a comforting thing when I get nervous and forget what I am about to say. It gives me the chance to collect my thoughts and remember what I was going to say as well as staying on track of where I was going in my speech.…

Nevertheless, I knew that I would achieve some form of catharsis if I took this assignment as seriously as a possibly could. From watching the persuasive speech, it is a recurring theme in my process of watching myself speak that I am much more sympathetic of myself after given said speech. What I immediately notice is that certain planned maneuvers such as the introduction weren’t always as clear as I wanted them to be. The flash cards that I help up might have been more effective if I had less content on them.…

My strengths included my great vocal quality and how I am able to maintain a confident yet enthusiastic composure as I was speaking, even though I was shaking and fumbling my words on the inside. Also how my facial expressions and tone was humorous and kept people engaged in my stories and wanting to hear more about me.
