Therefore, without the general purpose of your speech there is no speech because the base of the speech is left out. The general purpose of an informative speech is to educate the audience about a specific topic. The general purpose of a persuasive speech is to bring the audience into the way of thinking, views, beliefs, and values you want to enlist in the audience. The general purpose of a special occasion is to celebrate, bring enjoyment, motivate or set up a communal agenda.
The specific purpose is the second item you need answered which is the exact ideas you want to get across in the audience. It adds depth to the general purpose as it goes beyond it. The specify purpose is what you want the audience to get from the speech.
For example, if I am at a conference to give information to engineers, scientist and government officials on how we can save the Earth and keep it protected, my general purpose would be to inform. My specific purpose could be how do we stop sea levels from rising as perhaps different speakers talk about different issues and their solutions.
