Everyone knows the importance of getting good grades, but what if it isn’t as important as we all thought it was? What if the idea that grades should be valued above all else is actually hurting students more than it is helping them? We are taught from a young age that we need to try as hard as we can to get A’s in school because if we can, any college will open its doors to us. We learned that good things will happen to us if we can excel in all of our classes. These ideas have worked their way so deeply into our minds, that few people see anything wrong with them. Sure, ending the year with a 4.0 GPA is great, but what does a high GPA say about what a student actually learned? The answer is simple: nothing. Learning facts should in some way lead to expanding a student 's thinking skills or relate to their daily lives. Some teachers consider this and work it into their teaching methods, but many don’t. It seems to me that in many classes, I am being prepared to do nothing but pass tests. For example, I am told that I should know certain things for the ACT, but not how they will help me after college. It is true that students have to make that connection themselves often times, but it is impossible if there is no connection to make. If I am going to spend so much time and put so much effort into school, I should be learning things that I will be able to use for the rest of my life. I should have classes that will help me to broaden my mind and think in new ways. I want my grades to reflect on the connections that I am making, not the amount of information that I can temporarily cram into my head before a test. Schools seem to only want students to do well on tests to reflect well on the school district, but they don 't seem to care as much about the students as
