Their friends, teachers, and maybe even strangers will perhaps give them unpleasant looks, say negative comments, and openly disapprove (Rodriguez and Glatzer). Like if it isn’t enough what they are going through, in the book “The Pregnancy Project,” as part of a social experiment, a high-school student, Gaby Rodriguez, pretended to be pregnant for six and half months. Before the project started the prejudice against Hispanics and teenage motherhood reared its ugly horns, she was told she would end up like her mother and older sisters as teen moms. Everyone expected nothing more than pregnancy for her so she decided to “live down” to other’s expectations. She fakes baby growth each month and records how she is being treated and what people are saying about her. At the end of her senior project she concludes it at an assembly in front of the whole student body by ripping her “baby bump” off and revealing to everyone she was never pregnant. Her goal was to teach a valuable lesson to them and explain how many stereotypes surround teenage pregnancy. Imagine being a teenage girl who has to sacrifice a lot, but doesn’t have the time or money required to take care of a baby. They have to face the reality that their life will radically change. Going to school can be almost impossible for the mother of a newborn baby especially if they don’t have any type of support system in their household. Some fathers of the babies may be supportive, while others might completely abandon them and not want to have any contact with them. A newborn baby needs constant care - from numerous of diaper changes to scheduled feedings. With this in mind the teenage mother will have to get used to not going out every weekend anymore, might even lose some friends, and having very little time to study if she manages to stay in school. Now she doesn’t only have to think about her, but her newborn baby also. “Someone else’s life depends on you. Having that kind of responsibility is so stressful” (Taylor qtd in Kenney 8). Girls in these situations should seek help whether it be from parents and friends or even organizations. Some organizations are dedicated to help desperate teen mothers through their pregnancy. The most important thing is to try and get the support needed, so that they can resume to their education and maybe even get the chance to learn useful skills to earn a living (Pregnancy, Parenthood and the Teenager).
Overall, it is important to be aware
