Speech On Diversity In Australia

was heading to my morning class when I saw horrific graffiti written on the school wall. “TRUMP 2016” was plastered with chalk all over the east building. On behalf of the University of Ysir-copyh, we have enough with this oppressive, bigoted and offensive speech. It's time for the administration and the justice system to silence this rhetoric once and for all. This college is one of the best known in the world because of the efforts for inclusion. Part of the University’s mission statement is as followed, “Our College embraces diversity with the knowledge that it significantly enhances the quality of education” and “Our College supports the vigorous and open debate of ideas within a community marked by mutual respect.” This clearly supports …show more content…
In a couple of days, a conservative commentator will be speaking to our students. I plead with you to ban him from speaking to our college. His hateful rhetoric labels him as a “radical conservative terrorist”, because everything he says offends me and my friends. He once said to defeat ISIL is to call them “what they are,” radical Islamic Terrorist. He should understand that not all Muslims are terrorist, and it may offend people who follow this great philosophy. We cannot allow racist talk show hosts attend this college, and instead, he should stay on FOX News, which is the biggest cell for Conservative Terrorist. As Dean, you have to make sure there are police ready to arrest the speaker. Even though I am not going to listen to him, or any of my friends, I am very afraid I will hear something offensive, and I might attend to make sure that I don't. Alas, I already started to plan a protest in front of the auditorium to prevent him from speaking this week, just in case he still comes. I understand it may take too long to hold a trial for thousands of people who hold a certain belief, so I also suggest we separate these racist, and oppressive people who hold these belief to a different part of the campus. They will still get the same curriculum, the same books, and the same experience, but they will be separate from me and my friends so we do not have to continue listening to their ideas. You will make sure they are separate but equal, but personal, I think it will be better to feed them information and not teach them anything so they cannot have the will to hold offensive

Just because the students like what they had to say doesn’t mean they should be convicted for stating their opinions. Though a bit more extreme the Texas vs. Johnson case dealt with a similar issue of distinguishing between threatening and disliked opinions. Johnson was arrested mostly because his actions offended someone. Similarly, these professors and administers are being forced from their jobs for saying…

In his 1852 speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”, Frederick Douglass voices an authentic critique on the “peculiar institution” of American slavery. In a constructive yet patriotic tone, he argues for the end of slavery and for the realization of full racial equality. The language that the famed abolitionist leader develops within his oration provides a framework to approach issues of ethnic discrimination that exist in our modern world. In particular, Douglass’ historical declamation can be employed to analyze the recent event concerning the vandalism and ethnic targeting of Asian-American students at Columbia University. Douglass, who lived during a time in which abolition was considered radical and unpatriotic, uses his rhetoric…

The philosophy club had a good idea in inviting someone with a different view than the majority of students at DePaul in order to be open about free speech. However, the candidate they chose in this case is probably the most extreme example of conservative that they could’ve possibly gotten. Despite his views being based off of conservative values, Richard B. Spencer takes it to a whole new level. The “alternative right” level. Of course, Richard B. Spencer has the right to believe in what he wants to, we do live in the United States of America after all.…

February 7th, 2016 there was a stabbing in Cazenovia, a student of ethnic diversity was stabbed behind subway around 2am. On the 9th, a racially slurred, inappropriate, and hurtful Craigslist response was posted online that went viral within the community and many black people expressed they have not felt safe since. The following day, the campus held a dialogue circle to discuss race and diversity, sadly the majority of people who attended were ethnic minorities and the few white people in attendance were mostly student leaders. In class, Thursday, February 18th, we discussed civil rights, social rights, political rights, and slavery. In lieu of recent events and our class discussion on Thursday it is important to discern the difference between…

Infantilizing College College campuses across the U.S. have initiated change, and it’s not the tuition and costs of textbooks, it’s the elimination of anything considered controversial from classrooms and curriculum. A shift is being made to rid college campuses of offensive, racial, or sexist material and topics. In the September 2015 issue of The Atlantic, authors Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt poignantly title their article “The Coddling of the American Mind” and investigate why U.S. college students are demanding censorship in their studies and “trigger warnings” on the syllabus’ (Lukianoff and Haidt). A crusade is taking place across college campuses everywhere to rid subject matter and discussions of issues that may be regarded as…

An article titled “What Is Hate Speech?,” by Alan Dershowitz, discusses the idea that anything said by anyone could be seen as hate speech. The article is almost twenty-three years old and its question still remains unanswered. Recently, hate speech has become an issue on college campuses across the nation. This is because they feel the need to protect their students from hateful speech while at the same time uphold their First Amendment rights. This causes universities to be stuck in a limbo between protecting their students’ rights and protecting them from their rights.…

Finally, I have been raised to see diversity as a basic strength of our nation. I believe that the future of positive diversity within our country is at a cross roads as another presidential election approaches. While political candidates leverage the differences within society to create fear, I hope to use this same diversity to better myself, my friends, and the university. I appreciate the efforts of the Ohio State University to promote diversity and inclusion and look forward to these experiences as I move on to the next chapter in my…

As a college student, you are paying for the courses that you take and you expect for the professor to teach the material that you are required to learn by the end of the semester for your exams. In college, it seems to be the norm for professors to go off topic and go on a rant about current social issues or even about our current president. To prevent this from occurring David Horowitz, a conservative activist created the Academic Bill of Rights. The Academic Bill of Rights has a focus on eight broad principles that would put an end to students being a victim of hearing professor political or religious beliefs. Colleges and universities should officially recognize the Academic Bill of Rights.…

Free Speech and College Censorship In a time where political views and religious beliefs, and even college criticism have become a part of discussion on college campuses, most colleges have a bias that affect students in positive and negative way depending on own political views. Their is also misrepresentation of information in the lessons they teach due to the political and religious bias. There are many organizations that are raising awareness of this problem and spreading the word.…

The topic of free speech on college campuses currently has been a huge hot button issue in the media, especially in the United States. The controversy this topic brings is deeply rooted in the history of not only higher education, but in the history of the development of this country. Often people are all for freedom of speech, until someone speaks out against them (as a person) or one of their core beliefs. In an effort to give full disclosure here, I believe that I should state that directly after I completed my undergraduate degree I did apply and got into Law School. While I decided not to attend Law School, I do believe that the courses I took on Pre-Law and Constitutional Law had a profound impact on my beliefs.…

In the article titled, “Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought,” Jonathan Rauch concludes that hate speech should not be censored on campus. Rauch believes that students have a right to academic freedom. He believes that students will not feel free to explore or question topics that may be taboo, if they are fearful of reprimand, limiting their ability to learn about the world during a crucial time in their education. First Rauch argues that gaining knowledge is painful and Knowledge cannot be separated from pain, even the most “scientific” criticism can be painful. For example, Physicist Ludwig Boltzmann committed suicide following criticism of his ideas.…

Racism is not a new occurrence at this university; for example, in 2010, two white students littered the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center with cottons balls on the final days of Black History Month. An act of hatred that parallels the era of discrimination dating back to the 20th century. However, the most extreme incident of racism was when “Someone smeared a swastika in human feces in a dorm bathroom” (Huffington Post). People were reprimanded and punished, but nothing stopped these incidents from getting progressively worse. Instead of pacifying the situation, internet users turned to a social media app called “Yik Yak” to instigate more racist acts against University of Missouri’s black students.…
